Talk to me about guttering

We're on the verge of getting planning for our renovation and extension on our cottage. Need to look at guttering now but not getting very far!

I've ruled out PVC as we're trying to restore as much character as possible to the pennant stone cottage.

Whenever I Google, I just get local companies and not much info. Thanks in advance for any advice.

I’d love to replace our plastic guttering with seamless aluminium (the type that is measured and formed onsite). But it isn’t our forever house (we’ll move in 5 years or so) and most people wouldn’t even notice guttering, so it wouldn’t be money well spent in our case.

Seamless aluminium? I thought you could only choose from pvc and cast iron!

Cast iron.

We have aluminium box guttering, it has no brackets holding it up as it’s just screwed through to the fascia, it looks great and I’m very pleased with it ( powder coated graphite black ). You can have it painted in any real colour you want.

The company I got it from also do the old cast iron type too , but in cast aluminium, it was very impressive and looked exactly the same.

They also do the seamless guttering too, they showed me the thing they form in with on site but I went for the box instead.

Thank you!

Is cast aluminium substantially cheaper than cast iron?

That should say any ral colours. Not sure about the price , I would think it would be cheaper. I got ours from here afp ( aluminium fabrication products).

Can’t your architect advise? Do you not have to specify materials to the planning authority? There must be thought given to guttering in the design process, surely?

We have wooden gutters which are lined with metal and painted. It seems to be the standard gutteeig where we are and we didn't have any choice as we are listed. The down pipes are plastic.
