I'm in the process of buying a house in a village. Over the past two days it has come to light that planning permission was granted in late April for a new development of 150 homes in a neighbouring field. Whilst the house is 3 houses in from the field being developed it will be affected. Would I be reasonable to stop the purchase? I dont want the disruption, noise etc.

You can call a halt at any time up to exchange. But do it quickly and don’t mess the vendors around any more than you need to.

Absolutely you can pull out, I think a lot of people would in those circumstances. Agree with pp though, pull out as soon as possible.

Agree get on with it if you're going to pull out.

As for being reasonable, I'm afraid to say I would do it. My aunt and uncle live near a big area that's being redeveloped and whilst the actual development isn't near enough to see, they constantly have contractors / lorries / deliveries back and forth along their road from morning to night (and sometimes overnight!). It's also the main sewerage and electric supply to the development and their road has been up and down numerous times over the last 12 months. It would really put me off.

That’s the whole point of the searches to make sure what you are buying is what you are expecting. I wouldn’t want to live next to a big development it changes the feeling of an area . Can effect catchment areas for schools etc...

If you can’t live with the compromise, just go back to the east are agent and apologise with reasons.

Changingwiththetimes · 09/05/2021 14:16

A much better reason to pull out than many! Have you seen the plans and layout of the development? Access routes etc? It may not be as intrusive as you think, or it could be a nightmare.

Thanks for all of your inputs. I'm glad its not just me. Will be emailing people tonight.

We just moved in to a house on the fringe of a building site. They are finishing the last two properties three houses down from us and it is distracting. They’ll be off site very very soon but my neighbours all hated the last 3 years. And it’s a small (40) house estate

Our last house was a new build and we moved into the property as one of the first on site but they built backward from us and the houses behind us were finished when we moved in so they had no access or need to come near us for the next 4 years. Very little intrusion. As others say check the plans but back out if you have doubt. They will be building for years.

I would back out in your situation. Have just spent the last 3 years living next to a building site. No way would I want to do it again.
