What colour should my kitchen be?

I am in the fortunate position of planning my new kitchen, I have a good idea of what I want in respect of layout and functionality, but have no idea of colour. I am not the most imaginative of people but When I see something I like I will know. I need something suitable for a modern house. I am not particularly daring and tend to prefer something neutral-ish, and would like something that won't date too quickly!
So what do you suggest? I currently have light wood (maple?) doors and grey worktop. I still like it. My dh wants something very different but no idea what. Help please

We went for a really traditional shaker style 16 years ago - it's a cream colour with a metallic copper streak effect going through it, with hammered copper handles. We went for a solid beech top, with wood upstands and we've just recently added a bright duck egg glass splashblack behind the range.

Go neutral, and then you can make a colour scheme from accessories. We've changed the wall colours a few times, as well as kettle/toaster, blinds and rugs. Once you've got a good base, you can change the look very easily.

What about a light blue, @guessmyusername? Would look lovely with a wooden worktop, and if you're not keen on shaker just have a slab front, that won't date either as long as you steer clear of the gloss.

As it happens I was chucking out some ancient magazine cuttings earlier (from 2009!) and was struck by the pale green (though I know you don't want green) and blue kitchens I saw in some of those which really didn't look dated at all.

Agree with PPs that a dark blue/ green/ grey kitchen will scream "early 2020s" in a few years' time, though Instagram trends take a while to filter through to real life as people don't actually change their kitchens every 2 mins in reality.

Good advice above to randomly puck out stuff from Pinterest too, that's a great way of working out what you're drawn to. It's really hard not to be influenced by trends, but try to pick a colour you love region whether it's in fashion or not.
