Viewing Minging Houses

I’ve only been viewing for two weeks, but my God, the amount of houses that need a clean have shocked me. I know it can be hard juggling WFH with kids, but for the love of Christ, run a Flash wipe over the kitchen counter & rinse the bath pubes away.

We were tenants in a house with horrendous mould, windows and doors that didnt shut and a crap heating system. We were forever bleaching walls ceilings hall ways etc but left it mouldy for the viewing days so prospective tenants could see the problems. I knew the next tenants and they told me new windows central heating system was installed just after we moved out. So I hope the evidence of our slovenly ways, (so it seemed) , were a bargaining tool for them.
I hope it cost the bitch of a landlady a lot to fix. Smile

Libraryghost · 07/05/2021 16:11

I once viewed a property where the husband was fixing his motorbike in the living room, directly on the carpet. He was bent over, full crack on view, fag clamped in his gob. I couldn’t get passed it..

LouLou789 · 07/05/2021 16:11

We’ve recently moved house and went to ridiculous lengths to clean and declutter our home to within an inch of its life each time we had a viewing. This new house seemed fairly clean when we moved in but ohhhhhh, under the toilet rim 🤮🤮🤮🤮

Bubblebu · 07/05/2021 16:19

surely everyone knows it is easier (and much quicker potentially) to sell a clean house.
if your house is visibly and obviously filthy then you just open yourself up to people putting in an offer which is expressed to be low because of the presentation.

it is then up to the people selling to decide whether that is fair (and hence the discount is fair) or whether there are others who are prepared to pay more [notwithstanding the filth]/[because the reality is it is your own standards which are too high and the house is fine] etc

it is not like someone is asking you to stay over there - you are just viewing it.

but yes that kind of thing would probably put me off. i bought a houes which was a probate sale, someone old died there and it took me at least 6 months to get what i thought was the smell of cats out of the floors (and this was even after i had replaced all the carpets with new)

Smokeahontas · 07/05/2021 16:26

@UhtredRagnarsonn I meant at the very minimum do that.

Our new house looked clean when we viewed. Slightly cluttered but clean and smelt pleasant, but omg why don't people clean stuff properly.
The skirting boards had never been cleaned by the looks, the radiators thick with dust, just overall scruffiness, couldn't believe it as the people looked so well dressed.
But..... the worst thing was the toilet. It looked completely clean but under the rim was black! I didn't notice until I tried to clean it and i had to go out and buy extra strong domestos! I'm pregnant with terrible morning sickness and I literally had to watch a video on my phone to distract myself. It was the worst thing ever!

What would be the point if the whole house is minging though? As a viewer you’re hardly going to see a minging house and say “but at least there are no pubes and the counter has had a wipe” Grin it’s still going to be disgusting!

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 07/05/2021 16:43

totally agree OP, all the houses I viewed were vile. It took me a whole month to clean the house I finally bought. I had to change all off the light fittings and switch plates because they were beyond cleaning.
I had the toilet and seat replaced because it was ingrained with years and years of urine that would not come off.
The guy my age who sold it to me asked me out for a date. I just thought after seeing the pig sty you lived in no thanks.

pinksnowball · 07/05/2021 16:44

I've viewed too many houses like this. Often rented, but sometimes owner occupied. It's amazing to me that some people live in such filthy houses, and are happy for dozens of strangers to view them in that condition.

DoLallyTapMum · 07/05/2021 16:51

Mine was filthy but hadn’t been renovated in 50 years, so was going to be gutted anyway. Hoarders had lived there and apparently it took more than 4 large skips to clear out pre-viewings and there was still stuff in it. Personally I wouldn’t care if a house was filthy if I was planning to renovate it, but otherwise if I wanted to move in immediately then it would be an issue as I have a DS and couldn’t let him live there while it was cleaned.

I’m no cleaning saint, but I do keep generally on top of it and would make the house pristine for any viewings.

muddyford · 07/05/2021 16:53

Where I come from, 'minging ' means busy - as in, the town was really minging on Saturday afternoon. Obviously a different meaning here!

When we bought this house the previous owner had not wiped out the cupboards in the kitchen nor cleaned the dishwasher filters. From analysis of these locations I can say they lived on tomatoes, lentils, olive oil and ground coffee...

Besom · 07/05/2021 16:59

I viewed a minging house once and to top it all the son came down the stairs having just done a really stinking poo in time for us to go and look upstairs! Maybe they didn't really want to sell it!

Smokeahontas · 07/05/2021 17:03

I usually enquire as to whether it’s owned or rented - only one has been rented and it was immaculate.

I’m definitely glad I haven’t looked in the loos

Our previous home was a council house. All of the interior doors had been replaced and some of the kitchen cupboard doors too.

We had to use a scraper on the kitchen floor tiles to clean off the layers of dirt before washing with boiling water and bleach.

The neighbour said the previous tenants were mucky, so no idea what it was like previously.

AhaShakeHeartbreak12 · 07/05/2021 17:06

We viewed one with mouldy food in the fridge. My MIL opened it because we smelled something off around the house and wanted to know what. Also had dressing gowns still hanging on the doors

Pandapawson · 07/05/2021 17:18

bluntness I wonder if I know the same person? Was she getting a divorce?

Always immaculate in her dress and obviously spent a lot of time on her appearance but her kids and house were filthy. I never could understand it, she had plenty of money.

AliceMcK · 07/05/2021 17:19

@Bluntness100

Your title made me laugh and I know exactly what you mean. Some folks really live in filthy homes

I’ve posted about one before that we went to see.

Seven figure house.
Looked fab on line.
Pulled up and a really attractive well groomed woman was there, she owned it.

As we went in we could see the filth.
She looked at the agent and said “ working house “ shrugged and walked out. She sat outside when we viewed.
He said he’d told her previously and repeatedly about getting it cleaned.

There was literally rubbish strewn on the floor throughout. Sweet wrappers, bits of screwed up paper, crisp packets. Just rubbish. Actual rubbish. On the actual floor. Like strewn all over the living room carpet.
Dishes piled up on every kitchen work surface.
The grease in the kitchen and smell was outrageous. Cooker fridge etc all pure filthy.
The cat litter trays hadn’t been cleaned for ages I think. I don’t own cats but the smell of cat piss made my eyes water in both the living room and bedroom. You couldn’t breathe. I don’t know how she slept in there.
The bathrooms and toilets were shit stained scummy messes.
The towels were filthy, visible dirt and in piles just tossed on the floors.
The bed sheets were visibly grimy, like you could see the actual dirt on the linen on the unmade beds.

Honestly for one of the first times in my life I couldn’t see past it. I was absolutely shocked. So was my husband. It was pure filth. Every single room. Was totally minging.

And she was one ofthe cleanest, perfect hair, perfect clothes, perfect make up, really attractive women, you’d ever lay eyes on.

I don’t know if there was a mental health issue. And she did sort of look at me in embarrassment and look away as I walked out. So she knew. We both smiled and said thanks politely . But she must have seen the discomfort in our eyes in terms of seeing how she was living

There are so many people like this, they appear so perfect on the outside but disgusting homes. I have several tradesmen in my family and the stories they tell 🤢🤢🤢. One of my DBs always says give me a working class council house any day, at least there is a good chance it’s clean when I go in.

I also had a friend whose home was awful. Her parents ate out every night, always had the best wine and food on the menu (I worked in one of their favourite restaurants). But their house was god awful, no carpets, rubbish everywhere, never opened a window, the windows and nets were black with mould, the bath made me retch, my friend slept on an old mattress on the floor with no carpet underneath it. I actually made an excuse to go home because I couldn’t stay there, even as a slob of a teenager. When she left home she moved in with a group of our friends, I remember her parents breezing into the house to inspect it and make sure it was up to their standards for their daughter. All our friends just stared opened mouth as we’d all been to their house.

gumball37 · 07/05/2021 17:28

The people who bought my last house saw it in a state of disarray. I was mortified! I wasn't home and my realtor had accidentally made MY viewing with another client! So I had NO clue anyone would be there. Dishes in the sink, kids toys on the living room floor and our cats roaming free instead of crated. I thought for sure anyone would pass, but obviously they didn't!

Yubaba · 07/05/2021 17:32

We once viewed a house where the walls and ceiling’s were brown with cigarette stains 🤮

We bought our house as a probate sale and it was filthy, I ended up spending £50 the day we moved in on cleaning products and bleach, we also had to rip up all the carpet in the bedrooms as they were sticky, they had rugs over them when we viewed it and don’t even get me started on the loo!

trevthecat · 07/05/2021 17:32

We actually bought the house we saw as the most disgusting!! We were assured it would be empty and cleaned when we moved in. I spent hours cleaning our previous house so it was ready for new owners. The house we bought... It was still full. And by full I mean food in the cupboards, furniture, grime, the lot! Turns out the owner had died and the niece was sorting the sale. Yopa, the agent, were absolutely shocking at the whole process and told us the owner still lived in the house

osbertthesyrianhamster · 07/05/2021 17:38

Yes, puts me right off.

Hoppinggreen · 07/05/2021 17:39

I have a family member who lives in a large 4 bed house in a nice area.
Whole family head to toe in designer gear, flash holidays, expensive cars, out all the time - all shared on SM of course
Their house is awful, I have pretty low standards but I won’t eat there or use the loo. It’s very untidy with things stuffed in drawers and cupboards but it’s really grubby as well. You actually stick to the floors.
They had a Pricey new bathroom a few months ago but I don’t think it’s been cleaned since

SwedishK · 07/05/2021 17:41

I once viewed a flat which had tenants in it, clearly not wanting to leave. It was a small 2 bed flat, with 5 early 20s male tenants. They were all in their boxers (one still in bed), although one had a bathrobe on too, and the place was filled with cigarette butts, empty beer bottles and reeked of weed.

The agent was so embarrassed, and I didn't buy the place.

torquewench · 07/05/2021 17:43

My friend bought her house thinking it had a grey living room carpet. When she moved in, and the previous owner's furniture had been moved out, it transpired that it was originally a salmon pink carpet, but just filthy where it wasnt covered by the sofa and chairs, etc 🤢
