Stupid question - will removals company take down shelves?

Thinking of going for a full packing service as dismantling our beds etc will be a PITA and I'd rather not have the stress of it all on moving day.

At the other end I'm just asking them to put things into the garage as the whole of the new house needs to have flooring fitted.

At the old house will packers take things off walls? Shelves, TV, etc? Or do I need to do that before they come?

Of course.
They do everything.

Soontobe60 · 05/05/2021 22:30

If you’re removing shelves you need to make sure the buyers know!

Soontobe60 · 05/05/2021 22:31

Also, you need to check with the packers first, don’t just expect them to do it. Ive never heard of this being a thing though.

catchyjem · 05/05/2021 22:33

You need to get a survey done where you highlight everything that's going and agree in advance if anything needs dismantled

mummabubs · 05/05/2021 22:42

Ours won't unless you pay extra. We looked into this but as they were planning to charge £108 just to dismantle a king size bed we decided we'd do it all ourselves! Several of the companies we got quotes from explicitly said they will dismantle large furniture for additional cost but won't dismantle shelves /anything attached to a wall, so maybe don't assume they will!

HamCob · 05/05/2021 22:43

No, they will just pack in my experience. They won't touch 'fixed' items.

mummabubs · 05/05/2021 22:43

Should have clarified that we are paying for packing too, not just removals.

HamCob · 05/05/2021 22:45

Unlike the above poster, I've never come across companies who've charged more to dismantle beds and wardrobes etc - surely that's a given if you're paying for removals!!

Changingwiththetimes · 06/05/2021 00:42

I would think you'd have to unfix things from the wall, or explain that you need this doing.

Bouledeneige · 06/05/2021 00:51

I think you need to be clear about fixtures and fittings with your buyers. If you remove anything that leaves holes in the wall you will be expected to make good and fill the holes.

I had the full packing service and it was really worth it - particularly when it came to taking apart and reassembling beds, sofas and the dining table. When you get quotes from the removals firms you will need to specify all the furniture being moved so they can cost it and also everything you expect to be dismantled and reassembled.

Thanks all.

We don't have loads of stuff so I've been wondering if it's actually worth it to pay for packers and removals. The big items to be moved are 2 sofas, 2 beds, 2 chests of drawers and a washing machine.

Everything else is probably manageable ourselves. May speak to some companies and see if I can get a reduced fee for just moving the big items listed above and dismantling the beds, especially as they're not being put into the house at the other end.

I only had 1,300 cu feet of stuff to pack - 2 double beds, 2 chest of drawers, 1 sofa etc. But packing all the small stuff takes time. The removers did it all the day before (and didn’t need the whole day). It would have taken me way longer to do it. No problems no breakages.

Whatever you opt for, do get 3 quotes. I got caught up in the end of March stamp duty frenzy when tons of people were trying to move at the same time. My first two quotes were £1,500 more than the third!

joeysapple · 06/05/2021 18:21

I've had a few quotes and so far they're mostly between £700 and £800 which seems a bargain. Waiting to see if that's just for removals or for packing too!
