Does a back door right next to a window look weird?

We are about to start major renovations including knocking rooms through to make a big kitchen at the back. We will have 5m sliding doors along the back of the house. Problem with the current design is that that is the only exit into the garden and I think it will be a pain to have to always open sliding doors to go outside. We can't put a side door in for various design reasons. I don't want to go for bifold which I know gives an option of effectively a door at the end you can open.

To one side of the sliding doors there is a support pillar of a couple of feet and then a very wide window. We could easily replace the window with a door but that sacrifices having the sink under the window. There is space to have a single door there though with a smaller window right next to it with a sink under that window. But will that look weird having a door and window right next to each other (practically joined)? The door would be a full sheet of glass to match the sliding doors.

I've got myself completely confused over this!

We currently have sliding doors as the only way out to the garden, it's fine? I would definitely not consider putting an extra door in?

I have a door and window right next to each other and it works for mine, whether it would for yours is very dependant on how it all looks with the sliding doors (saying that my parents always use the sliding doors as a door to the garden, can't remember last time their side door was actually unlocked even.)

We are having a door put in but while it’s next to sliding doors it’s into the utility. To help with dog management..so she’s not charging into new extension covered in mud.

In you position, unless you want more light. I don’t think I’d bother.

The 5 meter sliding doors, are they bifolds or actual sliding ones like old-school patio doors? Bifolds have a door on one end you can use as a normal door, no sliding the others.

We have sliders and I don't think they are any more of a pain to open than a regular door.

A slider is quite easy to open?

Thanks for all your responses. Yes they are sliders, not bi-folds. We do have a side door off the utility room but the utility room isn't accessible from the kitchen (please don't go there!)
Really interesting to hear from those who only have sliders the they don't find it a pain. Perhaps we don't need to bother with the door after all then 🤔. We do have a dog to let in and out and I just thought they might be a pain to open each time compared to a door.

We have sliders and are replacing them with a fixed panel and door as I find them a faff.

Zarinea · 04/05/2021 15:20

We just have a slider. Very slightly more faff, but certainly not enough to inspire me to build another door.

Our back of the house is 4.8m of glass and 2.4m high, it's door, window, slider, window all in one big opening.
It looks fine and the only unexpected thing is the door is 2.4m high and quite wide but it just goes lfits in proportion. Also we can invite a giant to live here.
Lots of front doors have a narrow side light and it looks fine also.
We wanted a swing door as sliders are a bit of a pain to just nip out. The swing door has a closer on it for wind reasons.
