Should we share survey with agent?

We've recently withdrawn from our house purchase as the survey was awful. Numerous issues including a completely botched extension - surveyor said it's the worst he's seen in two years.

Knowing what I know now, I feel a bit naive as I think some of the issues could have been spotted at the viewing. I also think it is incredibly unlikely the vendors did not know about them. However, the agent claims they were unaware and would like to see the survey.

What do you think is reasonable in this situation? We paid £1500 for the survey, which is now useless to us. I don't see why I should share it with the vendor free of charge. Could I ask for 50% of the amount we paid for it? I've never been in this situation before so I don't know what's normal.

sounds like a good idea

Ask them to pay for it! But checks terms and conditions as many say it’s only for commissioning person

I would not share for free either: i can’t really think of survey issues that a homeowner would not be aware of, and if so they can always get their own survey!

Yes definitely ask for a contribution if you want to share it.
£1500 is a lot for a survey though. They could get one done for around £600 so you are unlikely to get them to pay that much.

Check if you are allowed to share it, but definitely for free

*definitely not for free

I was born overseas. Its usual there that the home owner have an independant survey done which is free for them. Serious buyers can then either get their own survey done, or pay a reduced price for a copy of the one the owners got.

I too would be asking a fee to give them a copy. CF's!

I just paid £1300 for a full structural on a three bed rend of terrace in London, so I don't think your survey was expensive - and you could argue it's saved you thousands!

We paid 50% (£200) for an existing survey through the sellers estate agent from someone who'd recently dropped out of a purchase. I think the estate agent is more likely to do that rather than pay you up front

Yes, ask them to pay for it. Our survey uncovered significant structural issues and our vendors subsequently decided not to sell but we sold them our survey. You will need to make them aware though that as they were not the original commissioner. They cannot use the survey in any legal sense (ie if something was missed and subsequently comes to light they cannot sue the surveyor). You/they may be able to negotiate with the surveyor to transfer it to them officially, but there is usually an additional fee chargeable for this.
