Open shelves in kitchen

Do you have any open shelves in your kitchen? Would you post a pic?

Pinterest and Instagram are all great but everything is so staged. I want 'real'!

I can't decide whether to go for it or not.

Lurking for the pics...

mobear · 01/05/2021 17:10

I don't have them - I'm considering it in our next kitchen - but I think if you do you have to write them off as storage as to my mind they're purely a decorative feature...

CatherineMaitland · 01/05/2021 17:14

All the stuff on them will go greasy and need washing annoyingly often.

Speaking from experience...

murbblurb · 01/05/2021 17:19

Two on the wall on each side of the hob - clear space left above hob as it is gas. Oil, salt, flavourings etc, plus containers of cereal.

There's an extractor fan above the hob ( not a fugly noisy hood, a quiet efficient fan) and stuff doesn't get greasy. Saves a lot of cupboard opening when cooking.

Kitchen not art installation.

TinyGlassOwl · 01/05/2021 17:48

Also lurking for pics. I really want to put some into kitchen in new house but am worried that they may be a bit style over substance.

sarahc336 · 01/05/2021 18:22

Don't they get messy and greasy even with regular cleaning?? Intrigued as I think they look nice xx

FoofOfTheWalkingDead · 02/05/2021 00:39

@murbblurb, pics please!

spotcheck · 02/05/2021 00:47

I just did this and love it. I still have all my dishes/ glasses, nice cookware. Everything on them gets used regularly, so I'm not worried about how greasy they'll get. I'm not quite done, so can't post a pic- but mine look quite similar to ones on Pinterest (. 😁. )
I recently bought new dished though, and they were a nice colour...I wanted to be able to SEE them
😂😂

AnnaSW1 · 02/05/2021 01:08

I'm not a fan.

Panda2021 · 02/05/2021 06:56

If on Facebook join diy on a budget group , can get pictures of everything and anything there if you use the search feature to search open shelves.

bouncydog · 02/05/2021 07:47

Will definitely get greasy and grimey from cooking. They will need everything taking off them and thoroughly cleaned very often. We had open corner units in our old kitchen - never again.

MrsJamin · 02/05/2021 11:44

I had open shelves in my last home's kitchen, I loved it. Looked great in a small space giving more room at headheight than cupboards. I really hate standing at a hob or sink with my face right near cupboards, it feels really claustrophobic. As long as you use the things regularly on the shelves and use a good extractor fan, its fine regarding grease build up.

Mizydoscape · 02/05/2021 13:30

These are our shelves. I love them. They don't get greasy but it's all stuff that is used regularly (except the cat teapots that I take down and wash off every now and again).

That looks nice. How far away from your cooker are they?

Acovic · 02/05/2021 14:20

Don’t.

They were on the list of things I hated about my old kitchen. Everything stored on them got SO grubby.

Bobbots · 02/05/2021 14:22

I am about to put some up in our new kitchen but they’re at the opposite end of the room to the hob. They will still collect dust but at least not grease!

Bobbots · 02/05/2021 14:23

Oh and if you do get them then DONT put glasses on them. They look awful within about a week.

ContinuousMonotoneBeep · 02/05/2021 14:24

This is what I waa wondering. They look so nice but I was thinking in reality they'd be a pain!!
GreyhoundG1rl · 02/05/2021 14:25

If you have a good cooker hood things shouldn't get covered in grease on a weekly basis.

Ariela · 02/05/2021 14:26

Don't get them if you have an active dog!
I have ONE tiny shelf, solely for the radio. It gets REALLY grubby I think because I don't remember to clean it when doing the work surfaces after use. And it gathers the dust. I think the current very active dog creates a lot, sure the house wasn't like this before the dog.

Mizydoscape · 02/05/2021 14:39

@GreyhoundG1rl they're the other side of the kitchen. I wouldn't put them up near the cooker.

They're really nice. I love your wall colour.

Mrsfrumble · 02/05/2021 15:45

We have very limited kitchen cupboard space but are renting and can’t do anything about it, so the shelves are a necessity rather than an aesthetic choice. I do like them though. The shelving unit is from IKEA, and it and contents do need wiping down every so often. They’re on the opposite side end of the kitchen to the stove though so it’s not too bad.

Thanks everyone.

I think I'm hung up on a 'boho' kitchen... probably not as practical as it is pretty!

Badgertadger · 02/05/2021 19:40

I love the look, but my experience is that they're a bloody nightmare. They get really dusty/greasy. Everything has to be washed regularly. I've just redesigned kitchen to get rid of the bloody things!
