How can I mouse-proof hard to reach air vents?

questionsquestions1 · 30/04/2021 21:31

The front of my house has old broken air vents sunk just below ground level (see attached pic). I want to mouse proof them somehow, leaving airflow, but:

  • They're hard to get at
  • Have a range of materials: stone wall at the top, tile surrounding, rough concrete at the bottom
  • The concrete at the bottom is very uneven, sloping down like a natural sloped rough cliff

I considered attaching a mesh higher up where it would be easier to get at, but then dirt would fall through and eventually it would become blocked up. They're also quite visible from the top so the top of any cover needs to be vaguely presentable.

How can I get a tight, mouse proof covering but still leave air flow in this awkward space? My best guess is thick wire mesh and lots of adhesive, but I'm not sure how I'd get every bit of edge stuck with no gap and it not looking a mess.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

You can buy mesh covers on Amazon designed to go over vents. We got a handyman to fit them.

Thanks for the suggestion. The problem is that mesh covers are designed to fit neat flat rectangular spaces with edges to stick or screw into. These space are not regular shapes and don't have neat regular edges.

Been doing a bit of rodent/leaf proofing myself lately OP, so see if this helps - depends how particular you are!

Try Amazon for "Sternguard stainless steel drain covers".
They aren't very thick so you could get one that is large enough to cover the whole area and glue or screw in place (I'd probably not fix it and just plonk a flower pot to hold it in place, but that's me).

Alternatively, if you input B07VQMXW9F, into the Amazon search section once on the home page, it gives you the option to purchase from Stern Engineering Ltd., a bespoke product if you give them your covering measurements and shape required.
No idea what that would cost.

I have no connection to this company, nor did I purchase from them in the end.
I went down the route of Asda metal panscrubs to fill the gap with a chunk of rustic looking wood over the top to disguise.

Buy sheets of mesh that you can cut to the shape and size you want, (Wickes do one that has 6mm holes). Make it slightly bigger and then it will bend into the space snugly.

Mice will only enter a house when weather is cold and there is food around,

Fill with a brillo pad

Tell that to the family of mice who built their home in my motorbike's airbox!
