Bathroom remodel: moving toilet

We just moved house and the toilet is currently facing the door as you go into the bathroom. How easy is it to move the toilet to the wall to the right and have a small bath tab opposite the door instead (that will be a much better sight!). Note that this is quite a small toilet. But interested to know if doable? And rough costings of doing this? Thanks

Any thoughts?

Yes it’s doable, but moving the sewage pipe to a different wall is very difficult and expensive, you’ll need to get some quotes in. They will need to put in new pipes because they can’t use the existing ones, as any bend risks the sewage getting stuck.

It is all about connecting up to the soil stack. The stack is the big pipe usually on the back or side of the house or may well be boxed in internally depending on the design of your house.

The connection pipe from the toilet to the stack will either be in the floor or going out of the wall. Your current toilet will connect to that.

Now you have to work out if you move the toilet can you still connect that internally or externally. Does that make sense? Inside you would be boxing in pipework, externally you would need to bore a hole out the wall and connect the pipe outside which requires someone on a ladder to connect it all up.

The fall needed is about 1 in 40, so for every 40cm of horizontal run you need to drop it down by 1cm. If you upload a floor plan it will be easier to see if what you want is feasible.

It's not that difficult but it does depend on how you pipes are, and what the floor is (concrete or whatever) as you may have to take up the floor. Boxing in might be possible but you say it is a small space already. Get a plumber in for a quote and decide of it's worth it.

Ok, thanks for the above! I’ll have someone to look at it. It is for the main bathroom upstairs.

When I read the title I thought you wanted a toilet that could be moved, sounded like a good space saving plan. Then realized you just wanted to relocate it.

(My parents moved theirs when they combined the toilet and bathrooms into one. I think it involved extending the soil pipe as you can see it on the outside of the house).
