single glazing windows in Victorian house

DD and her partner are moving into a rented Victorian house with single glazed windows. Other than putting heavy curtains up (I've also suggested on at the front door which leads straight into one of their rooms) is there anything else they can do to ensure the house is warm. She suffers from the cold anyway and wears lots of clothes to compensate but also they don't want huge heating bills! TIA.

Thermal/blackout blinds make a big difference, as well as making sure there are no draught gaps

Draft excluder foam strips round doors, & draft 'sausage' or similar at base of doors

Rugs also make a difference. Upstairs might be considerably warmer - is using an upstairs room for a living room & a bedroom downstairs an option?

You can buy film from b and q which you stick over the window with double sided tape and then use a hairdryer to shrink it. It works well and you can't notice it very much. It is a good idea to push folded newspaper in any larger gaps between the sashes first and tape all of the gaps with masking tape to prevent drafts.

DespairingHomeowner The two spare rooms are each going to be used as studies for each of them as they are continuing to WFH. We are researching thermal/blackout curtains and decent ones are expensive but if it helps to keep the heat in, that's what they will have to budget for which they haven't done to date as they were in a flat which didn't have the same issues! Rugs are on their list as all the flooring is wooden.

GeneticsBunny They have some film on their front window already as it looks out directly onto the street (!) Haven't heard of putting newspaper between the sashes, thanks for that one.

www.diy.com/departments/diall-clear-window-film-l-4000m-w-1-5m/1802835_BQ.prd. It is this stuff. It doesn't go on the glass, it creates an air gap between the glass and the inside framebit like fake double glazing. Sorry can't remember how to make it into a link

Geneticsbunny · 29/04/2021 13:25

Looks like the link worked!

Thanks Geneticsbunny!

You can get, or used to get, a brass strip that you nailed around the door frame. Much better than the foam stuff.
