Traditional bathroom or modern bathroom

Hi All,

We are planning to renovate our bathroom this year. I would like a traditional bathroom (in keeping with our Victorian flat) but DH wants a modern bathroom. Thinking ahead, does anyone know if a traditional bathroom would negatively impact the price of a house when selling (or am I overthinking all of this?!)

Can you articulate what the difference actually is?

QueenOfPain · 26/04/2021 09:58

Cheap modern bathrooms are ten a penny. A traditional bathroom done well would surely be a beautiful feature.

This is the only example I can think of, but I follow house renovation youtuber who has just done a traditional bathroom but it’s also very fresh and modern;

Modern = fashionable (now), which means that it will be out of fashion in a few years.
Traditional = classic, timeless.

Guess which one we went with !?Grin

What IS a modern or traditional bathroom? Can you share images?

I love bathrooms and they matter to me when looking at houses - whether they are already ones I'd be happy with or need changing/have the potential to become what I want.

I like space, ideally a separate bath and shower, space around the bath to put things, calm decor. I'm not sure whether that is modern or traditional?

Do you mean panelling? If so think carefully about this. In the old days labour was cheap and people didn’t really care about mouldy joins etc - it would just get used until it needed to be replaced. If you can afford a cleaner / regular renovations then consider a flatter look or one that doesn’t use real wood.

GrumpyHoonMain · 26/04/2021 10:49

If you can’t

gdrmvrm · 26/04/2021 11:07

@QueenOfPain - Looks amazing! Traditional it is then! Thank you :)

@GrumpyHoonMain - No panelling, it is garden flat and I am sure will have damp issues. Currently, the bathroom is tiled throughout. Will be doing the same thing using these:

For walls - www.mandarinstone.com/product/onyx-nouveau-moonstone-gloss-porcelain/
For Floor - www.firedearth.com/sorrento-marinella

Fired earth is quite expensive, trying to find something similar but cheaper.

@Constantcrayfish - When I say traditional, I am referring to more the fixtures for the bathroom (as shown in the youtube video attached by @QueenOfPain)

Is it a big space? Not sure I’d put those floor tiles down onto a bathroom unless it was huge.

gdrmvrm · 26/04/2021 11:26

@GrumpyHoonMain - It is not mega big but a decent size - 2.7m x 2.0m

I like the look of this for floor tiles too - www.toppstiles.co.uk/bathroom-tiles/gatzby#selection.product_colour=Gatzby%E2%84%A2%20Marble&selection.size=45.2cm%20x%2045.2cm%20Square

This might actually go better with the wall tiles. what do you think?

OP posts:
GrumpyHoonMain · 26/04/2021 11:27

Yes that’s better

BiBabbles · 26/04/2021 12:01

The onyx moon stone is lovely, and I agree that the second tiles look like they'd go better. The first ones were really busy to me.

How it'll go down when you sell will depend on the market you're going for. My new home's main bathroom is a mix of traditional decoration and modern accessibility fixture (the shower has a seat on the wall, it's all positioned to be easy to move around) and for us that was the right balance, but it's all different tastes.

QueenOfPain · 26/04/2021 12:07

Funnily enough, I believe the youtuber that I originally linked to used to work for Fired Earth!

Constantcrayfish · 26/04/2021 12:08

I've had good customer service and products from this tiles site, if helpful:

halcyondays · 26/04/2021 12:10

Unless you’re planning on selling soon, I would just have what you like.

gdrmvrm · 26/04/2021 12:26

Thanks all, really helpful!

@Constantcrayfish - Thankyou, will check it out as well.

We went modern in our period house. Most of the traditional features are more fiddly to clean, so we went for simple fittings (Hansgrohe), and easy to clean surfaces. Our neighbours have a beautiful traditional bathroom with wainscotting etc but it’s a bit of a dust trap and ours actually looks better IMO.
