We are looking to downsize and go mortgage free for a while. Where can I buy a nice property in the UK in a good area with good local schools for under £200k? Don't want to be in the middle of nowhere though. Only need a 2 bed property and we have one primary aged child. We don't need to worry about staying close to family.

Northern Ireland.

Grammar school system so great for academic kids.
It’s not the most exciting part of the UK, and it can be insular, but people are friendly, it’s beautiful and you get a lot for your money.

I think what had been established on this thread so far is that people who live up north dont know what warm means Grin. We like to go on trips to the lakes or Scotland, making durham, the north east, Yorkshire, Lancashire etc seem warm in comparison.

However, if you just invested in a good warm and waterproof jacket, and decent footwear, you can get a 3/4 bedroom house near great schools for £200K.

Lincoln, www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/find.html?locationIdentifier=REGION%5E804&minBedrooms=2&maxPrice=200000&propertyTypes=bungalow%2Cdetached%2Csemi-detached%2Cterraced&includeSSTC=false&mustHave=&dontShow=&furnishTypes=&keywords=
Many of these houses are near enough to good primary schools and most secondary schools are good or outstanding. Lincoln is pretty green and is also quite small so easy to get around.

I agree. And add in some thermals and you’re good to go. Much more bang for your buck in the north.

If you type in Exeter and 20mile radius there’s lots of options

@Tavannach ideal, as long as you don't have a car. Parking is a nightmare around there!
