Edwardian house wall plastering

Ladies, we have bought an Edwardian house in London. The ceiling and walls are Edwardian with the picture rails, wallpaper over the "ancient" plaster etc. We are hesitating whether to plaster them from scratch or just paint and keep them as they are. We are inclined to update the ceiling but arguing over the walls with DH. Who had a similar experience with an older property and what have you decided at the end? Many thanks 🙏🏻

It really all depends how the bad the walls are once you' removed the wallpaper - also are you going to repaper the walls or paint them?

For example, if you walls are anything like the ones in this DIY video then, yes, you will need to get them done.

Also de be aware that you may well need to use lime plaster on external walls.

You’ll probably find if you start removing old paper and paint, the plaster will come with it. If the paint already on the walls is not “breathable” I’d seriously consider replastering with lime plaster and painting with breathable paint. Damp in old houses is often because modern materials don’t allow for the escape of moisture in the air through the walls, despite the house being designed to do just that.
