Height above worktops for kitchen wall units

What's the ideal gap between the worktop and kitchen wall units?

I currently have 44 cm which is fine (I'm quite short) but they seem to be hung higher these days. My kitchen supplier has put them at 54 cm above the workshop in the design. I can't decide if I'll like it better (she says it will be airier).

What I like about the lower units is (a) the ease of access to the bottom shelf and (b) that the worktop lighting isn't visible.

Thoughts? Experience? Many thanks.

It's your kitchen have it how it's easier for you to use it.

If you are having the wall tiled then position the wall units so that you don't have to cut tiles.

I've been guided by extractor height, which will be integrated in a cupboard so needs to be 500mm over my induction hob. Gas to be 600mm I think for gas.

Also consider if you are storing appliances under the wall cupboards.

Ours are high and I am constantly pulling out the kitchen steps.

Thanks. It's getting the balance right between the right height for me personally and also the aesthetics (has to align with the fridge top).

I didn't think about the tiles, thanks for the tip.

50 cm would allow me to store the food processor underneath.

The extractor will be set a bit higher so the bottom line of the units won't fully align.
