Can I just put lino on it?

We have a large shed that we are redoing. We don't have a lot of time (both working, 2 small children) and the garden is currently unusable as all the stuff from the shed is currently in a tent that's taking up all the space. So time is at a premium. We are also trying to keep costs as low as possible especially as it's just a shed. We would like it to be reasonable inside though. It every much going to remain a shed not a room, but ideally one that isn't unpleasant to go in any more. We were promoted to do this project as the roof collapsed.

Anyway, the previous owners put down sticky tiles on about 2/3rds of the floor. We've managed to remove them using a heat gun (they couldn't have stayed as they were all curling up anyway) but there is now sticky residue all over the floor. We've tried scrubbing and extra strong sticky stuff remove but it doesn't work well and is painfully slow. we just don't have the time it would take to scrape each tile off (I'm reckoning 20-30hrs work).

We can't just paint over it as it's too sticky. We can't leave it as it is. I tried scrubbing it with some sugar soap hot water and it just made slime. And is now both slippery and sticky.

I'm thinking just laying a roll of old fashioned lino flooring and pretending the underneath doesn't exist?

Are there any other options or downsides I'm overlooking please?

The shed is 5x 3m so quite large

Can I just put lino on it?

My concern about Lino would be moisture building up underneath

Could you put down something that would allow airflow?( something like a wood pallet)?

TheQueef · 22/04/2021 15:08

I would glue vinyl to it.

Somuchgoo · 22/04/2021 15:11

Is vinyl the same as lino?

I spent a couple of hours pulling the tiles up a few days ago, and another hour scrubbing the residue off my hands in a hot bath.

Urgh.

Cheaper than lino usually and you don't need any cushion floor etc for the shed.
Even at that size I bet you can find a roll end or two squares.

Ok, I'm such an amateur, the stuff that we used to put on kitchens in the 90s, I'm thinking that was lino, but Google now tells me that's vinyl?

So when I'm thinking of lino I probably am thinking of vinyl? I'm confused. And a bit pathetically unclear about all this.

It might be wise to use a waterproof layer between the shed floor and the vinyl. It's usually a heavyweight plastic but I can't remember what it's called. If not the vinyl might go mouldy underneath with damp.

Thank you. Damproof membrane + vinyl sounds like a way forward :-)

Afaik lino is the posher stuff Grin I think it has a better backing than vinyl.

SavannahLands · 22/04/2021 16:01

If you put down the Blue builders damp proofing membrane first, then lay your Vinyl over that, then there won’t be anything sticky between the layers to ruin in the Vinyl. Most large DIY superstores with sell reasonably priced rolls of vinyl flooring suitable for this job, you don’t need to buy the expensive branded stuff if you are trying to keep the costs down.

Jarstastic · 22/04/2021 17:42

I believe Lino is a natural product and vinyl is plastic?

Capricornandproud · 23/04/2021 22:58

Why on earth not just get a floor fitted of a sheet of ply or mdf cut to size and screwed down?

Capricornandproud · 23/04/2021 22:59

Or interlocking fake grass tiles (or decking) from argos or ikea?

Somuchgoo · 25/04/2021 08:45

@Capricornandproud
We could get several sheets of MDF I guess, but certainly not one sheet 5x 3m, and we'd have to take the roof off again to get it back in.

We'd looked at interlocking tiles but they'd cost in the range of £400-600 wheras the vinyl was £112.

The vinyl is ordered. I'll put up an after picture once it's done.
