Hello!
We are wondering if it would be a bright idea to build a house. I won't go into detail of the whys and so on at this stage because the first hurdle is that I have no idea how to find a plot.
Anyone got any tips?

I've looked on the classic sites as well as plot finder...and there's just not very much. Am I missing something?

I thought I'd have another good search today for a radius in a bit of a crescent shape around and below York.

There are a few affordable plots and fields which are described as arable or for grazing.
Anything you're allowed to build on seems to be up in the 300-450k area... which to me is already the price of a house.

Please be kind, I'm new to self building but am not a ftb and we've done a major renovation in the past.

So what am I missing? Can you build on the arable stuff? You can't can you?

In pre-Covid days, they used to do Exhibitions for Self-Build.

There appears to be a thing called the National Self-Build and Renovation Centre NSBRC but I don't know who or what they are.
Look what I found for this Friday!

We've built our last couple of houses with help from FIL who has built around 7 more himself. Our houses have always had compromises - generally location and garden size, but we're just about to buy a prebuilt house Shock and have lots of equity to put into the next house, after basically starting off with a £15k gift and £30k inheritance 15 years ago - so it's worth the pain for the gain!

However, we wanted to build this time rather than buy, but the land situation is dire where we are. Either it's ok land and insanely expensive, or likes ours before - but has even bigger compromises. I've seen a couple where you can barely get a car down the alley which leads to the land, let along rubbish trucks, deliveries, building materials etc for £2-300k

Sometimes it's worth scouring google earth in areas you like for houses with big gardens that have road access, you can write or give them a knock and if they've thought about selling part of their land.
