We've recently bought a house that needs a total refurb, and we're adding an extension. It's long been a dream, but now it's reality, I'm floundering a bit. Where to even start with looking at things? I find myself comparing boilers one minute, then browsing upholstery fabric the next whilst stressing about wall lights in the back of my mind. Confused
There's so much choice I seem to keep coming back to the same few sites; John Lewis, Made etc. There must be so many gems I'm missing - please give me your recommendations for both the nuts and bolts of refurbishment and the prettification later on. My preferred style is midcentury modern and clean lines, but would love a distracting nosy at anything!

Looking forward to the recommendations on this thread!

Assume you already spend a lot of time looking at West Elm. Spark and Bell also has some lovely lighting.

I’m the same, I’ve found houzz really a really helpful and overwhelming website in equal measure!
We are starting with heating, roof, electrics etc before looking at any pretty stuff!

I'm doing all boring stuff stage, like new boiler, rewire, tearing out kitchen and bathroom as well as old wall paper and plastering. I'm waiting for the fun to start....

Atkin & Thyme (furniture), Bedfolk (bed linen), Claybrook Studio (tiles), Corston Architectural (sockets and switches), DeVOL (furniture, kitchens, lighting), Dowsing & Reynolds (electical, lighting), Floors of Stone (tiles), Form Lifestyle Store (accessories), Lusso Stone (bathrooms), Spark & Bell (lighting), Vinterior (vintage everything), Wever & Ducre (modern lighting), Zara Home (everything).

www.homestyler.com/

I spent hours on this site, not for buying but for planning interior design and layout. The free version works fine!

I’m placemarking, as I’m in a similar position to the OP.

Thanks for this thread, @Espirito

I came on to say Houzz too . Found our designer on there. ( OnePlan) shes sooooo not an interior designer - full of practical knowledgeable stuff .

PresentingPercy · 22/04/2021 09:21

I like the good old fashioned home magazines. I actually buy them! They have web sites too. So look at KBB, Homes and Gardens, House snd Garden (more traditional) and Houzz.

For nuts and bolts stuff I seem to currently spend my life on the Screwfix website, so much cheaper and better quality that the DIY sheds, and the staff are really helpful.
For mid century interiors inspiration The Modern House and Remodelista.
For shopping bargains H&M, Zara Home, Maisons Du Monde, La Redoute, Dunelm (surprisingly good at times), Argos (for Habitat, who they now own), and of course Ikea.
For more spendy shopping Cox & Cox, Loaf, Rowen & Wren, and Neptune.

Thanks for starting this, I've just moved into a new property and a bit bamboozled by all the choice..

user1471538283 · 23/04/2021 21:39

I did up our last two houses and although i absolutely knew what I wanted and I designed the doors for the last one I would never again pay the kind of money I did again!

Mid range stuff is absolutely fine. As much as I loved the roll top bath i used it maybe five times.

Salome61 · 24/04/2021 11:28

Thanks for the inspiration. I'm widowed, my adult kids have left home and it's just me. I have just downsized and anything I do here will show my personality, I feel a bit nervous about it.

I found this Sophie Robinson course on line with £100 off and have booked it - it's now £245.00. I've got some money left over from my house sale and hope it will be save me making some expensive mistakes.
