Painting wood doors - picture attached

Hello everyone, we just bought a house!
We are first time buyers and have never done any diy work. Our bedroom has these wardrobe doors. We want to paint it into a lighter colour - probably a shade of white?
How should we go about it? What all will we need? What should we do?
Sorry, if it's a very dumb question. But we really don't know anything.

Appreciate your help. Thanks a lot.

No advice.
But wow those are magnificent doors.
That room must be massive

Crazy colour!

I would give them a light sand, maybe a coat of primer and then gloss.

If not glossing I would sand completely, prime then satinwood them.

If I was especially lazy I would maybe try painting directly over the top of them 😂

Sand them down, either by hand or with a mechanical sander. Wear a mask. Put on a coat a white primer or stain stop paint with a brush. Then probably two coats of your preferred paint. I’d use a satin finish gloss. Use a very small roller for the panels and a brush for the mouldings.

Are there still places where you can dip & strip? Might be showing my age as this was all the rage back in the 90's.

zombieaccount · 19/04/2021 19:14

@LizzieMacQueen yes you can get companies that will dip and strip a door. Costs around £21 per door where I am.

Sand them to provide a nice surface for the paint to adhere to, and do at least 2 coats of good quality primer. A P&D friend said that 1 coat of primer is pointless

There's an method to how you paint a paneled door....see link.

If you are thinking white then don't use gloss. Look for a paint that specifically says non yellowing (normally only 1 per brand). Otherwise anything not directly exposed to sunlight will start to look like its had years of nicotine staining (and quite quickly).

Bluntness100 · 20/04/2021 14:42

Do not gloss, it goes yellow and quickly.

Use a sander or a primer, then paint.

But bloody hell they are a particular taste...😂

I don't know how to do it but we have doors just like that in our bedroom. They were the colour of the wood surrounds on your doors and we had them painted a light matt colour. They look fantastic now.

UCOinanOCG · 20/04/2021 14:45

This is pretty much what your door could look like after painting.
