Help with housing association

Hi,

So we have accepted a house with a housing association. We already live in one of their houses. They are giving us 10 days to pack, move, rip up carpets in current house etc we have 3 kids. One is 7 months and my husband works full time. We have been told this upon sign up. We haven't even started packing, husband hasn't had chance to book time off work and I haven't contacted removals yet and would need carpets putting down in main rooms of new house. This is all very rushed. They said it's because legally we can't have two tenancies. Is this correct even if we are packing to move? I don't think we can manage it all. I have no one to help with childcare.

Ten days? Confused. Why on earth can't you pack in ten days?

Amijustagrump · 19/04/2021 18:31

Will depend on the housing association but that does sound right, my nan died and we were given 2 weeks to clear out and do carpets etc for her home of 50 years.. it was awful!

Presumably you have bid for this house, or were already on the waiting list to be offered, so surely you could've anticipated a move was on the cards??

Most people have to move out of one house and into another on the same day.

10 days is plenty of time once you get started. Have you got access to both properties?

cakebythepound1234 · 19/04/2021 18:36

Yea this is pretty standard, housing associations tend to want moves to go quickly.

EvilOnion · 19/04/2021 18:39

We moved from one HA property to another in May and were told the same thing but due to Covid they were a bit more relaxed so there was a 2 week crossover where we had to paid rent on both houses.

If your rent is paid monthly in advance they need to give you until the end of the month that you've paid.

Thats loads of time get the movers booked and carpet fitters in ASAP you can pay for a packing service they are like locusts

MixedUpFiles · 19/04/2021 18:56

Normally I would have started packing earlier, far ahead of signing on a new place. Are you having to pay for two places during the overlap? Could you use the money you are presumably saving from having a shorter than you hoped overlap to hire people to pack? I’ve hired professional packers and they can have you packed in a matter of hours. You could also hire just random people, students, sahm, etc. they won’t be as efficient, but they would get the job done.

You sound very overwhelmed.

Break down all the tasks and split them between you and your husband. He can't pack whilst at work but he can make phone calls in his breaks or send enquiries etc before or after work. He can get you cardboard boxes on his way to and from work and you can pack up on room per day even with a baby in tow. He can built you three hours boxes per night and tape them ready for you to fill the next day.

Its going to be a tough ten days but moving is never easy. Get organised dig deep and get yourselves into your fantastic new home!

EvilOnion · 19/04/2021 19:02

It is doable but you'll need to be organised.

First see if DH can book some last minute time off - if not he can still help out when he's home.
If kids are old enough, get them to pitch in.
Contact removal company tomorrow and get booked in.
Get a carpet fitter booked in to measure and order asap.

I spent 4 hours raking through all of our stuff with a binbag - be ruthless!
Fill suitcases with any clothes/bedding you won't be using in the next 10 days.
Box up anything that you can add you go, keep the bare essentials out.
Pack a room at a time and store everything in one place ready to go in the car/truck/van.

CattingTime · 19/04/2021 19:22

How much stuff/how many bedrooms do you have? 10 days sounds ok to me!

Get a skip, ditch everything you don't use or need, box up everything else.

Happycat1212 · 19/04/2021 19:32

Wow you’re lucky! My council only gives the weekend as they say you will be charged a full weeks rent otherwise surely you knew you was bidding and you viewed it and accepted it? They didn’t just offer it to you out of the blue so you’ve had time to prepare

whataboutthecat · 19/04/2021 19:48

Do you have to pay for new carpets in the new house?
