I have been recommended DIY kitchens by a friend. How does it work if you are not based near them?

Toddlerteaplease · 20/04/2021 21:34

Well, the designers has done me a beautiful design. Made brilliant use of a tiny space. But it's over budget. Waiting on a quote from their fitter who also works privately and is cheaper. Two tradesman i know is abd have been recommended work with Howdens. So will take the design along and tell
Them to copy it.

Magnet came to look at my kitchen but wouldn’t let me see the design unless I pay the deposit!!
How are you supposed to know if you want it without seeing the design?!

OverByYer · 20/04/2021 22:08

I have a Magnet kitchen, my builder had a trade account with them so was much cheaper to buy. The quality is great but I wish I’d spent more time thinking of the design such as drawers positions

Milkywaystars · 21/04/2021 07:10

I got a Howdens kitchen at a fraction of a similar one in magnet, the quality is very good. My builder fitted it in and all is well so far, had it 3 years now.

OverByYer · 21/04/2021 07:14

My kitchen fitter told me all kitchens are pretty much the same. He rated IKEA and Wickes. Said nearly all are from the same factory in Germany. He said it’s the fitting of it that makes the difference.

I've got an appointment with Wicks, but not for a couple of weeks.

I like my Magnet kitchen but designer did make mistakes with measuring. As it was their fault they gave a bespoke door which remedied the issue but took a long time to resolve. The quality is still good 10 years later and some of designs very innovative. My neighbours have, this year, had a Magnet kitchen which arrived with problems with fit so I would say keep a close eye on measurements if you go for them.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 21/04/2021 10:02

My parents had an real oak IKEA kitchen which was excellent quality for the money and fitters said was so easy to fit.

mermaidsariel · 21/04/2021 10:23

How do you go about ordering an Ikea kitchen though? Someone needs to measure it all up and plan it. I couldn’t do that without help.

A friend has had an awful recent experience with Magnet. Their subcontractors (billed as Magnet fitters) have mucked up multiple things- drilling through the recently laid underfloor heating so it failed, mislaying the floor tiles so they had to be redone, botched tiling. The remedial work is around £5000. Magnet refused any responsibility, won't give details of their subcontractors so she can take them to the small claims.
After their experience which has been ongoing for 18 months I wouldn't touch them with a bargepole.

OverByYer · 21/04/2021 10:51

Tbh if I was doing my kitchen again I’d probably go for a local company that do the whole lot

Toomuchpollen · 21/04/2021 10:51

PS Magnet you've told them to take their factual review of your shoddy work on a Facebook review down as it would affect their case. You won't acknowledge a complaint, so what case?
I've seen the pictures it's a botched job.

That sounds very like my sister's experience of them. I wouldn't go anywhere near them.

Our Magnet kitchen is over 10 years old and it's been great, no issues whatsoever, infact family comment on how good it still looks in comparison to ones they had fitted at a similar time. I wish it wasn't in such good condition because I'm bored of it now and fancy a new one.

RandomMess · 21/04/2021 22:46

I think the problem with most places is the expertise of the fitters, very much pot luck unfortunately.

Boytrio · 22/04/2021 00:01

We used Magnet and their customer service was appalling. Avoid avoid avoid!! It doesn't matter what the quality of units is like if they're not prepared to acknowledge and resolve inevitable problems. Our kitchen fit went on for months. In fact we were essentially living upstairs for four of those weeks - with two toddlers and a baby - because of ongoing problems with the flooring downstairs . It was horrendous. The fitters (we used Magnets) left a solid wooden door off its hinges, propped up in a doorway and didn't warn us - my 2 year old pulled it down almost on top of him, if he'd grabbed the handle with his other hand we would have been in hospital at the very least. It was the single most horrifying moment in my life. When I complained to Magnet about the incident and the conditions we'd been left in they said 'our duty of care extends only as far as the kitchen cupboards'.

Boytrio · 22/04/2021 00:12

Oh I almost forgot(!) I also received an electric shock off the kitchen tap. When I first alerted Magnet to the problem the Company Installations Manager (!!!) said that 'if I wanted to claim the costs of an emergency electrician I'd have to prove it was because of the kitchen'. Beautiful apology Magnet for endangering my life. Again I complained and they literally could not care less. In fact they outright denied it was anything to do with them despite the fact the newly laid underfloor heating and kitchen pipework had to be earthed to make it safe. A mother of two died previously from an electric shock after a kitchen fit, you'd really think they'd take it more seriously!!!

We were told essentially the same thing, that an expensive kitchen badly fitted will not be as good as a well fitted, cheaper kitchen. The fitting is key to the end product.

Our kitchen is Cuisines Schmidt and was fitted 30 years ago. It's lasted very well but is now looking a bit tired and dated (just like me! Grin) and we're thinking of replacing it this year.

Two of our neighbours have had Magnet kitchens installed in the past 3 years and they're both very happy with them and recommend them, so I will definitely check Magnet out.
