Would be it be stupid to reduce the number of bedrooms?

We currently live in a 4 bed bungalow. My children are older and the youngest will be leaving for Uni in a couple of years. Currently the smallest bedroom is just a guest room / dumping ground. It is next door to the main bedroom. I am thinking about knocking through to make a bigger master room, possibly with walk in dressing room as well as the ensuite that's already there. Its a modern house (about 20 years old) so the rooms really aren't big and I've always longed for a bigger bedroom.
DH thinks it makes sense for us to make the house work better for us rather than worry about re-sale value, which I do agree with but also worry it might be a silly ove so interested in opinions.

Closed wardrobes and a dressing table. It looks quite sleek.

Have a word with a local estate agent. They would give you an unbiased view.

I've also seen people use glass fronted billy bookcases to show off handbags and shoes.

I have this, apparently it's tacky (according to a previous MN thread) but I give no fucks Grin - I like looking at them.

Everything is tacky to someone, if we all liked the same styles then what a dull old world we'd live in!

Also, what's the point in having nice things if you never get to see them?

With work like this it really does depend on how long you want to stay.
It is work that will cost money that will likely negatively impact the value of your home so for selling on its “lose lose”
However if you stay for 20 years it’s less of an issue

I have had several dressing rooms over the years. I definitely would add a door from your bedroom. It needs to be ensuite, so to speak. DH is correct about that. Adding a door is easy.

If it’s a solid door, open hanging is fine. If it’s a glass door, you don’t want to see the hanging. Also you need drawers. Bookcases are fine for shoes. Maximise all wall space. Up to the ceiling.

I don’t think 4 beds with a box for 1 room is desirable. Just consider though if it should be an office. However adding a single door from a bedroom doesn’t mean it cannot be an office. But in that event, don’t block the main door to the box room off.

Not exactly the same but just to reassure you on the luxury bedroom feel, we've just built a dressing room by dividing up a large bedroom with a wall and a single door to it to make a dressing room. You'd think it would feel smaller but it's absolutely the opposite, getting all the wardrobes and clothes paraphernalia out of sight has made the remaining bedroom feel a lot calmer and more luxurious.

We have the remains of the existing built in wardrobes but for the additional ones we have used PAX carcasses from IKEA then we're having doors/skirting and architrave built around to make them look built in.

I had open wardrobes in my last dressing room and they were an absolute dust trap, it's really annoying brushing the dust off the shoulders of things you don't wear often, so I definitely wanted doors this time.

We have done something similar except we have a tall thin townhouse. Originally the sitting room was on the first floor. Quite a big room but ended up as DS's bedroom as it wasnt getting much use as elderly relatives werent good at stairs.

Now 2/3 of DCs have left home we have reconfigured and split the old sitting room into a dressing room off our bedroom and an office for me.

The dressing room is lovely. We have mirrored doors in front of shelving & hanging space which DH built. DSiL calls it the yoga room because of the mirrors!

It has a doorway from our bedroom but no actual door which gives a lovely sense of space without feeling like we are lost in a huge room.

If and when we come to sell we could take a door off the landing and close off the door from our bedroom.

Thanks everyone. I just need to wait for one of my youngest children to move out then I’ll be right on it, you have all helped me to decide it is the right thing to do and I am going to have a lot of fun planning!

Grin I think we were in a similar position!

We had to wait until DC1 left home so that we could move everything about. It was like one of those tile games where you only have one space to move into.

Now it's done we suddenly have so much storage space!
