12m2 of 30cm high decking - what would you pay?

Hi everyone!

Had my first quote for some decking in my back yard... was very surprised at how much as I've looked on lots of websites and the quote was much higher than anyone of those estimated prices.

The yard space is just less than 12m2, almost a square shape, and just needs on long step along one side of it. It would be about 30cm high. Probably softwood decking, though hardwood would be better.

Has anyone had anything similar done? How much did you/would you pay?

I am getting more quotes, just wondered if mumsnet's experience could help also!! Don't want to be ripped off! Thank you!

For softwood, materials are probably going to cost you less than £100. Hardwood decking then probably £150-200

There have been a number of threads here recently where people have mentioned that they're being quoted silly amounts of money to install them.

It is quite possible to do it yourself. There are any number of guides available on youtube etc.

Here is one video showing the process that one woman went through to install her new patio:-

Worth having a read through here as you're right on the height limit.

Personally I hate decking, finding it slippery and a pain to maintain, so I wouldn't pay anything! Contractor costs are usually a shock to people though, it's all part of their charm lol

12m2 maybe around £1500 but it depends on ground conditions, waste, materials etc.

@nickymanchester I'd love to do it myself, but my yard is unlevelled and I've only ever done basic DIY like painting. :(

@Loofah01 Yeah I originally wanted it higher but thought it's not worth going through and paying for planning permission - I want it quickly and not pay more than I have to!

Thanks, 1500 is more like what I imagined. Would that be for soft or hardwood, you reckon?

Absolute basics! Composite or hardwood much more expensive
