Back-to-earth rooms

Does anyone have experience of back-to-earth rooms? We’re in the process of buying an old Victorian property that has two back-to-earth rooms, as it is built into the hillside. These types of properties are not unusual where we live, as it is a steep sided valley. Current owners previously had these rooms slurry tanked but this is starting to fail. Do we go for a repeat tanking, or try to manage them in a different way? It’s been suggested that breathable lime plaster and paint and good ventilation would be better for the building. There is only one wall that back-to-earth as it’s a terrace. Views on the best way to proceed?

I’d have said lime plaster and ventilation. We’ve a specialist line plaster company in the area who also happens to be lovely.
