discreet recirculating extractor hoods- IDEAS please ...

so our induction hob will be on a run of low level units and I didn't want any wall cupboards as id like to introduce some shelving in a different material on this wall. The issue I have is that I have to have extraction and don't want a classic look cooker hood. It seems I can't have a pop up down draft one as the depth of worktop will not allow the induction hob and extract behind (I know this works on an island) but won't to keep my island clear of appliances as its also our dining area! so opted to have sink and induction hob on run of units on back wall. Any ideas

I don't have an extractor at all. Works fine - I just open the back door if things are getting smokey! Building regs didn't require it (8 years ago, may have changed since then).

Can you build it into a shelf.
The shelf runs all along the wall with a break for the hood, but you carry the material used for the shelf across the front of the hood iyswim.
That would mean a very deep shelf, so maybe just a fascia of the same colour as the shelf around the hood.

recirculators are neither use nor ornament.

Any chance of a normal extractor? work much better, cost a lot less and are QUIET. Vent axia or similar.

A bit like this, but done better with more shelves above to distract from it, and you wouldn't have the chimney bit to deal with on a recirculator.

Completely agree. You might as well not bother with one.

pringlesandchocolate · 12/04/2021 16:51

@BluTangClan I like that idea best so far

I would prefer not to have one but building regs require one, we have recirculating one now that is rubbish !

@Woodpecker22 like this but they're so expensive like £4k

According to planning portal, if it is just a refurb you don't have to have extraction. Any existing system must be retained, but if you only have recirculating you don't have existing extraction. Can you put a fan in an outside wall? It can't be less use than a recirculator!

I feel your pain OP. We don't want one either... i caanot stand the noise. Plus we are having 4 massive velux that open electronically and also on a sensor for temp and humidity. Our hob is going in our island, don't want anything above it and have no interest in a built in one as I am a horrendously messy cook so can't even imagine the horror show it would become.

But we are building an extension so also have the building control issue. We will either install a vent axia /environvent fan (think bathroom fan so quite small, but more poweful and can be more attractive). Or, more likely, an inline fan. These go into an airing cupboard or loft and you just put a vent in and it sucks the air up and out the house. The latter are much more powerful and quieter in the kitchen itself because the fan bit is out the room. Both can be quite discreetly installed in the ceiling without interrupting your planned lines. Just make sure you get one with sufficient extraction to satisfy building control (normally measured in l/s or m3/h.

If you think extractors are critical equipment then probably not a suitable solution as doesn't have grease filters etc. But if you just want to tick a building control box then job done.

Just have a discreet wall fan on the external wall.

They do inline down drafts too, so they sit next to, not behind, the hob.
