Shutters

I'm in a Victorian house that still have the fugly curtains left by the previous owners. New curtains for the bay windows will cost £500-600 for decent lined ones that fit properly.

I'm thinking shutters might look nicer and be comparable in price?

Does anyone have shutters and regret it/love it?

What companies would you recommend?

TIA

I've put in shutters in my last three Victorian homes. I used Thomas Sanderson (be prepared for hard sell: manager's special/ we are in the area today/ if you sign now/let me just speak to my supervisor... they come in at say £4k and you get it for £2500) and the quality of the shutters and fitting has been excellent. Not a cheap option though - it's not going to be less expensive than those curtains, but you may find cheaper (but be careful of quality and they are not easy to fit DIY around wooden sash boxes)
First time I did top and bottom split but now just do bottom half. In bedrooms I then have blinds to finish off (you can get them just to come down half way) and curtains or blinds in living room, depending on how big the room is.
My next home is an edwardian terrace and standing in the bedroom I feel very exposed - shutters on bottom half will solve that.

We had shutters put in over 2 years ago now and every day I’m glad we did - I love them!

We used Clement Browne and were very happy with them.

We had them in our previous house and although I probably won't again (too expensive but also moving into a 1970s house where they wouldn't look right) I loved them, so simple and neat. They do make the room a little dark though, be aware of that.

We. Have ordered shutters for 2 bays and 3 other windows. I think each bag cost roughly 1200-1400 each

We have shutters to the three windows at the front of the house. 2 big bays and the box room. They actually make the rooms lighter than before. Love them.

Thanks everyone.
I think I'll need to shop around. More expensive than curtains but looks like worth it!

Were in a Victorian terrace and have wooden shutters in our front window cos it's huge. They look lovely and everyone comments on what a nice feature they are. Ours are split in line with the window frames so we can have the top half of the shutter bit open and bottom closed and visa versa.

One downside is they are like a magnet for dust. They never feel clean. We got ours from.a company inChester which I would never recommend. Wish we'd got them from Hilaries now. But this was 7/8 year ago and tons more places seem to be doing them now.

I've seen Victorian windows where they only do shutters to the bottom half. Ideal for privacy reasons (although would neighbours over the road still see in?) but saves cash.

penelopequiche · 12/04/2021 13:04

I'm a big fan! We have them on 2 bays and they look smart and are so low maintenance. You can very the amount of light/privacy and actually they weren't a lot more than higher end curtains

missbunnyrabbit · 12/04/2021 23:50

But wouldn't shutters let lots of heat out?

firebrimstone · 13/04/2021 17:48

Has anyone used the Shutter Store? 30% off on Blue Light. DIY fit but we don't have the original sash windows but UPVC replaced before our time. So should be ok to self fit,

Original frame though which is good.

We have shutters in our entire 5 bed new build. It cost about £6600. Best investment we ever made. We can shut off the bottom half & leave the top half open for privacy. They keep the heat in really well & let in a lot of light too. Much better than curtains in my view. We used Just Shutters, who were way cheaper than the likes of Hillarys, who quoted about 5k just to do downstairs (same quality) & for some reason said they were unable to do our front bays. Hmm

We bought our shutters from Clement Browne, they were excellent from start to finish. No pushy salesman, and the person who came to measure up and quote was the same person who fitted them.

They are fitted on our front bay windows, both up and down, as well as two other large straight windows. Cost about £4k altogether, so they're more expensive than curtains, but I love them, and would definitely recommend.

I can definitely recommend ShutterLab
