Looking at either a summer house or garage conversion to give us that extra space we crave as a growing family
Kids are teenagers and want to be able
to hang out somewhere fun rather than their small bedroom a

Garage conversion £7000 or summer house £10000. Both prices include all fixtures fitting etc all they need is furniture etc

If you have done either or both would love to hear both pros and cons

What do you use your garage for at the moment? Is it integral, attached or detached?

Changingwiththetimes · 10/04/2021 23:59

Summer house. A garage conversion is limited and you of course lose the garage! A summer house can be used as a teenage hang out, a quiet place to study or work. It (presumably) will have views of the garden.

NotABeliever · 11/04/2021 00:00

Garage conversion should be more convenient in all weathers.

llm24 · 11/04/2021 00:00

@AfternoonToffee

we use it as a make shift gym it’s integral

We have a summerhouse but it's at the end of a.long garden and gets very hot in summer so we don't use.it much. Our teenage children don't either.

@NotABeliever

that’s what i think , summer house all the rage just now this time next year it won’t be used

A room that is part of the house is always going to be better than what is, in effect a fancy shed at the end of the garden.

Certainly, as a buyer, I would consider a Summer House to be in the same category as a shed but a converted garage to be an extra Reception room.

Even if the prices were the same, or the garage conversion more expensive, I'd 100% do the garage.

Exactly.

EasterBunny21 · 11/04/2021 00:10

Garage conversion for sure!

@BackforGood

i’m with you but hubbie says it’s not a fancy shed it’s a proper room at the end of the garden 😂

I'd say a summer room.

I love our garage for bikes etc. If you can access your garden via a side entrance then they can have hang out space that doesn't affect your internal space.

Mosaic123 · 11/04/2021 00:32

Will the Summer house have a loo and easy access to a kitchen? How good will the roof and floor
be in 20 years time?

Surely the garage conversion will add more to the worth of the house and provide a downstairs bedroom/craft room/spare room which won't really deteriorate? And it's cheaper! No contest IMHO.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 11/04/2021 07:40

Summer House. Don't properly they're SO much more than a fancy shed. Especially if you can put in a loo & kitchen sink.

You're already using your garage for a gym, so if you can afford to do a summer room properly, I'd do that.

Woodpecker22 · 11/04/2021 07:49

It depends. If a summer house you need to make sure it is properly insulated as you will be spending a fortune on heating/cooling it. Also look at the floor structure, ours is suspended timber and would not support heavy gym equipment.

I think I would use an attached gym more, a summer house would be better for a quiet office space where you need to get away from the rest of the family.

Bluntness100 · 11/04/2021 07:50

I think as you want a teen hang out then the summer house will be better for them, they will feel they are not in the house ans more independent, you also get to keep the garage space, so it’s a win win.
