How important is a bath?

MrsPatrickDempsey · 10/04/2021 23:43

Main bathroom of our home needs renovation. It currently has a smallish bath - the only one in the house. We have an en-suite and cloakroom with no room to fit a bath. We are contemplating replacing the bath with a large walk in shower. It suits our needs as we are not bath people but I wonder whether we may encounter problems selling if we ever move. DH says as this isn't on the cards we should just replace the bath. Thoughts please?

Well it would be an essential for me

nillygin · 10/04/2021 23:47

This is something I would like to know too, we are contemplating the same thing at the moment. Presumably if the space is there it could always be reinstated by new owners in the future!

Ginger1982 · 10/04/2021 23:48

Depends on if you would want to cut out a large swaths of potential future buyers such as young families who would probably prefer a bath.

LawnFever · 10/04/2021 23:48

I love a bath, but if you’re genuinely not consider selling any time soon get what you’ll get most use out of

PinkBuffalo · 10/04/2021 23:48

Well everyone is different
When I moved into my house I had the massive bath taken out and a nice big shower put in. I never have a bath

CheshireCats · 10/04/2021 23:50

In would buy a house without a bath now kids are teens and only shower. I definitely would not have bought one when they were small.
Is it a house that would likely sell to a young family?

WarmDuscher · 10/04/2021 23:51

When are you going to be selling, realistically?

I would go for what you’d get the most use from.

Comefromaway · 10/04/2021 23:52

Agree with pp. a bath is essential when you have toddlers/small children.

The only person who ever uses our bath now my kids are teens is dd very occasionally when she aches (she’s training to be a dancer).

ForeverInADay · 10/04/2021 23:53

If you are going to be there at least 5-6 years, get what makes sense.

It will make selling to people with kids under 10/11 more tricky though.

WhyMeLord · 10/04/2021 23:54

We have a 3 year old and are currently looking for somewhere to buy. We wouldn't dream of not having a bath, if a place was already done up and didn't have a bath we would rule it out, wouldn't be a problem if it needed a new bathroom anyway and could put one in. I think of lot of people with younger children feel the same (DH and I are also very much bath people)

Bouledeneige · 10/04/2021 23:54

I love a bath and would never buy a house without one. I think it is a mistake but quite a few people seem to be doing it now.

MissMarks · 10/04/2021 23:54

It isn’t essential but it would massively put me off a house if it didn’t have one.

Aquamarine1029 · 10/04/2021 23:55

My husband and I hate baths. We have a lovely, quite large walk-in shower that has a built in bench which I love. I would never care if my home had a bath.

Badtasteflump · 10/04/2021 23:55

We were talking about this earlier - we have a bath in one of our bathrooms and were saying it must be at least a couple of years since anybody has used it (we do have showers obvs!). DH and I have never been into having a bath but used it for the DC when they were little. Now they're all teenagers it's just gathering dust - so in answer to your question, I wouldn't care if a house had no bath. I wonder if baths may gradually go out of favour anyway since they're not exactly very eco friendly.

NotABeliever · 10/04/2021 23:57

It would be a negative. I wouldn't buy the house unless there was space to put the bath back in.
Having said that, how small is your current Bath? If it's one of those 150 cm long baths then I would probably out in the large shower you want. The reason being, someone likes me who likes to have a bath would look at ripping out the small bath anyway.

Kottbullar · 10/04/2021 23:58

I think unless you know you'll only be living there short term you should do whatever suits the current occupants and not hypothetical future ones.

SwedishEdith · 11/04/2021 00:00

Well, I agree that you should have what you need for now. A bath is essential for me and both my teen/20+ kids love them. So, I'd discount a house with a new bathroom without one but would rip out an old bathroom to put one in.

BackforGood · 11/04/2021 00:05

I'd definitely want a bath. But if you genuinely aren't likely to be selling for 15-20 years, do whatever makes you happy, and take the hit on number of people interested at the time.

SpacePotato · 11/04/2021 00:16

Unless you are planning on selling in the next year or 2 then put the big shower in.

Your decision should be based on your likes and needs, not some random person who might buy your house in the future. They can put a bath back in if they want.

I hate baths. Would love a huge walk in shower.

joystir59 · 11/04/2021 00:20

I hardly ever get a bath and a walk in shower is an absolute must have for me.

cerealgamechanger · 11/04/2021 00:21

I find baths disgusting. Walk in shower all the way.

Smokeahontas · 11/04/2021 00:21

It’s an essential for me, if I don’t see one I’m already factoring in what I’d have to spend to put one one.

If I was weighing up two houses, one with / one without, the one with would win every time.

Seafog · 11/04/2021 00:22

I would buy a house with no bath, but never a house with no shower

Katjolo · 11/04/2021 00:24

Very!

GlamGiraffe · 11/04/2021 00:25

I wouldnt buy a house without one.
We have large walk in showers but everyone prefers the baths.
