Peeling bathroom ceiling - alternatives?

Hi all! We have a regular painted plaster ceiling in our otherwise tiled bathroom. It's not particularly high and has started peeling quite badly above the shower in particular.

I'm not that keen about sanding the flaky paint off and using some form of primer/bonding material as the ceiling was originally artex (though skimmed a few years ago) and I'd be concerned about disturbing any residue. Are there any good longer term solutions? I initially wondered about putting a waterproof material above the shower (like a sort of perspex square) so it would just need to be wiped down, but it's not a huge room so could look a bit odd. Also not sure if that's even a thing! Seen online that you can have waterproof ceiling tiles, e.g. foamy ones but they can be a bit of a fire hazard.

What would you do or have you done? Thanks for any thoughts! 😊

You probably need to be thinking more about ventilation otherwise there will always be a problem regardless of what ceiling material you use.

Thanks, @Kitkat151. Sorry - I should have said, at the same time we'd be looking at an extractor fan which it doesn't currently have. I'm hoping that (plus good window ventilation) and a more stable ceiling material will do it!
