Spray paint outdoor chairs

Does anyone have any experience of using spray paint to spruce up garden furniture?

Some of the cans of paint describe having a 'chalky' finish. Is this what I should be going for, it's for my garden table and chairs? Or will it come off on my bottom / back after sitting down..

I wouldn't want a chalky finish.

why do you want spray paint rather than brush?

what are the chairs made of? wood? metal? plastic?

mineofuselessinformation · 09/04/2021 17:42

Yes - I did mine 8 chairs and two tables last year in matt black.
I used the cardboard from some large boxes to stand them on, and did them outside in a still day.
Make sure you prep them well, and do them in fine weather so they dry fairly quickly.
Be warned you might need several cans!

Ugh, typos there, but you get the idea! Smile

It's a very expensive way of doing it, so make sure you prep the surfaces properly otherwise the paint will just flake off.

@mineofuselessinformation

Your chairs look great! How much did it cost you in total for the transformation roughly?

I could paint with a brush but a friend recommended spraying them. So I'm exploring that.

I think the paint was somewhere between £30 - £40. (Can't remember exactly as I did it in batches).
Well worth doing as the replacement cost for the wrought iron stuff is £850 (Shock) and around £400 for the rest!

Hammerite all the way, I’ve used it for years on a 30 year old bench and cast iron parasol bases.

CoolShoeshine · 10/04/2021 15:10

Hammerite spray paint is really good bit not a chalky finish. Very quick and easy. I reiterate the point about doing it on a still day though, any slight breeze and it will blow right back at you.

I just painted mine with a brush as it was easier and less messy than spraying them. I used Rawlins CombiColor paint after a recommendation on here. www.rawlinspaints.com/home/multi-surface-paints/1206-rust-oleum-combicolor-multi-surface.html
They have loads of different colours and it can be painted on without using primer. I found it really easy to use.

I’ve got some indoor paint leftover. Can I paint my wooden furniture with it?

BrilliantBetty · 11/04/2021 20:05

Thanks Lilly Rose.
Looks like good (strong?!) stuff, it even does UPVC

@Condenast indoor paint for walls? No I think you'd be better off using paint specially for internal / external wood. It might not take very well to the surface, and peel off. But I'm farrr from an expert
