Flooring alongside parquet

Just planning a knock through for a house we are hopefully buying which has parquet flooring downstairs (I've seen it called a number of things including mosaic, it's not herringbone it's the square blocks). We want to knock through the dining room and kitchen and keep the parquet, but not sure what to do in the kitchen. I'm not normally a fan of tiles, finding them cold and hard, but I can't see that wood would work next to the parquet.

Does anyone have any ideas and/or pics?

Can you find more of the same in a reclamation place and keep it going right through?

I would either try to replicate the parquet floor or rip it all out and put down the same flooring throughout.

Thanks both. I don't think parquet would work in the kitchen, I'd be worried about it getting damaged. I might have to get over my aversion to tiles!

I think the crux of it is what kind of look you're going for. If it's an open space, the same flooring throughout makes the space visually flow well. Two different floorings will make it choppy.

As for parquet in the kitchen, I really don't think you need to worry about it being any more damaged than anywhere else. Loads of people have parquet floors in their kitchens.

Parquet is pretty robust, and the whole point of it really is that it tempers and the wood takes on character. I’ve had it in a couple of kitchens and unless you eat like the Cookie Monster, it’s fine. Just wipe up spills before they soak in.

What’s your aversion to tiles? If you don’t like smooth texture or coldness then what about cork?

Ah ok, that's interesting that parquet should be ok in the kitchen. I guess maybe I could try and get some reclaimed then. Thanks for that, I didn't realise.

And yes, tiles too cold and unforgiving. Cork is absolutely an option, I've looked at in the past but the project didn't happen so put it out of my mind.
