Moving into rental for building work - tips?

We are starting our extension in August and have just managed to secure a rental property which should cover us for the majority of the project. I'm now trying to think of all the expenses and what I need to do in preparation before we move out.

Has anyone got a good checklist of what I should be doing (switching bills, redirecting post etc) or any tips? What can we switch so we aren't paying double - I'm guessing things like TV licence we can just change address but will need to pay council tax on both properties.

TIA.

We did this for 5 months. You can't cancel too many bills as of course builders need electricity and gas if putting in heating. We didn't redirect post as we were only 3 miles away. We did make a big box that said POST too leave in the hall and the builders put what little post we had into it.

We used it as an excuse to visit our property to see how they were getting on...

We didn't cancel the Broadband either. Just got a cheap one at the rental. We had to get a year's contact with a cancellation fee. Wanted a monthly one but it was too expensive.

Make sure you change your Amazon address. And change it back when you move back.

See what you can leave in the the property. We left one sofa and one coffee table.

You can move your TV licence to the new place temporarily.

Don't forget insurance such as car and buildings and contents insurance. Unfortunately ours charged admin fees and costs more in the new place. When we changed them back we got refunds of the rest of the year.

It's best to be honest about where your car/contents are located.

A property can be exempt from council tax if it is undergoing major repair work to make it habitable, or is undergoing structural alterations. This exemption lasts for 12 months only.

Ooo, I didn't know that @memberofthewedding, will have a look into that!

Yes, good point about insurance @Mosaic123, especially for the car as it's where it'll be parked!
