Putting drawers into existing built in wardrobe

KitKatBunny · 08/04/2021 10:46

New house has built in wardrobes in one room that just has slightly crap shelves in, the wardrobe itself is good. I want to put some drawers and a rail in so we can actually use it for clothing storage, got one quote from a carpenter for £500! For 3 drawers and a rail! So I'm feeling more inclined to bodge something....any advice / ideas / done something similar?

Just buy a set/sets of drawers to fit the gap. Should cost no more than £200. Even cheap flatpack will suffice if you build them properly , I always use araldite to glue the drawer fronts, I have ancient argos units in my spare room that are still fine after 30 years.

IKEA Jonaxel. It’s the range that replaced Algot.

Yes a set of drawers would be the easiest option but it's proving difficult to find something that will fit. But thanks @YippieKayakOtherBuckets that range looks like it could work

You can buy readymade drawers for kitchen units very easily. The cheapest ones start around £30. Wardrobes are not such a big market but the kitchen ones are widely available and will fit. The runners are screwed to the cabinet sides. You must get the ones with fully extensible ball-bearing runners, and preferably soft-close.

Standard sizes are 1000mm, 800, 600, 500, 400 and 300 wide, and usually about 450mm deep. Check that. The widths quoted are the external widths of the units, the drawers go inside and are naturally smaller. There are some companies who will cut the parts to odd sizes. The chrome or stainless sliding racks also look OK. Specify that you want internal drawers to go inside the cabinet doors. It is harder and more expensive to get matching drawer fronts, or to have drawers with no fronts on. The fronts are usually grey plastic. Google "Blum Tandem." You can get internal dividers or trays to separate small contents.

I'd go for a good brand like Blum, Hafele or Kessenbohmer. I was amazed at how shoddy the B&Q ones were.

You might find some advertised as wardrobe drawers. Check that they are equally good.

I found some wooden drawers that you may like the look of.

Runners are extra so it will work out more expensive. If you are not used to this work you may do better to buy ready-assembled packs.

And here are the wardrobe accessories

Hanging rails take an enormous weight so the end and central supports must be very strong.

I'm guessing your wardrobes are a metre wide.

Can't find anything I that size

But 900mm baskets.
