Will you pay more for a nice garden patio?

We are making few changes to the house. DH wants to redo the garden patio. We have concrete slabs at the moment (some broken), we have pressure washed them and repointed them and are serviceable for when the weather is nice. Would you pay more for a nice porcelain patio (example attached; note that sth like this will cost ~10k mark!) I am thinking this wouldn’t add much to the price of the house and perhaps the money is best spent elsewhere, eg extra storage etc. Note that While we do like the house at the moment this is not our forever house. What does everyone else think? Hmm

It wouldn't be something I would pay a premium for if I was looking at properties, no. Definitely not anything approaching the actual cost of it. If it's something you want to get done because you'd enjoy it, great! I wouldn't do it purely as an exercise in adding value, though.

That appeals to a certain sort of market that want extra living space rather than an actual garden so it would depend on who the target market is.

it is a decorative change so do it because you like it, not because it would add value. Even it adds a little value, it won't be anything like the 10K it costs to install. and those white walls & fancy tiles can quickly get chipped & dirty.

Only do it if you like it enough to justify the cost. I wouldn't pay more for it personally.

redcandlelight · 05/04/2021 16:22

the one in the photo isn't attractive to me, but tastes differ.
to replace almost the whole garden with paving though is awful imo.

however for a well layed out garden with practical seating I might pay a little more than the same sort of house with less usable garden space.

Lunaballoon · 05/04/2021 16:22

That wouldn’t appeal to me at all and I certainly wouldn’t pay a premium for it. Personally, I’d rather take on something that was ok for size, aspect and had potential, no matter what the current state is.

Changingwiththetimes · 05/04/2021 16:29

It might make it more desirable but not any more money.

God does anyone else hate the term “forever house”

Op it depends on how long you’ll,live there, if it’s five years irs likely not worth doing. If it’s ten then do it, because you make these changes to enjoy. You’re still living there remember,

LooseThreads · 05/04/2021 16:41

I think it's awful. It's like kitchen times but outside.

Thanks for the comments! That’s exactly what I was thinking!

I wouldn't pay more for a house for a patio, no. It's a nice to have, but not essential. I would also want a decent size lawn alongside it, and wouldn't pay extra for that either.

Waitingfor2025 · 05/04/2021 16:51

Just to clarify, the thinking is not to replace the whole garden but just improve on the patio we already have...

I quite like it if you have lawn / a play area as well but have a friend who did that (all white, planting beds etc) but even just one winter later, the white all looks a bit dirty, tinged with green/ moss in places, all needs re-painting. Its a high maintenance look.

I'm currently house hunting, I've discounted all the ones without actual gardens. I'm sure there are plenty of people who like that design though.
