White floors, White walls, White kitchen cabinets, white worktops, white fireplace

We are removing an internal wall to make a open plan kitchen. We have decided that the walls will be bright white, the flooring to be light cream/white marble effect porcelain tiles, light white quartz worktop and cream kitchen cabinets (after discussion here in Mumsnet :) ) , now the fireplace surrounding we are looking to choose is also white. Now I am wondering if its all too much white. Our furnitures are either black/dark brown. And the kitchen splashback will be black mirror gloss ones. What do you think, will it look good? I am also planning to have indoor plants, and the bifold doors will have black frames.

Hmm seems a bit too much monochrome to me. Maybe paint the walls another neutral that isn’t bright white?

Bipitybopityboop · 02/04/2021 23:19

Sounda lovely.
The Scandinavian look is timeless.

You can always add colour using LED lights, cushions, rugs, plants, flowers and colourful kitchen accessories.

GrumpyHoonMain · 02/04/2021 23:51

I want that kind of look too. You can add colour back in with accessories

Dontbesoridiculous · 02/04/2021 23:52

Too much, white cabinets, floor and walls ? I like white but not that much

SaucySarah · 03/04/2021 00:06

I love the simplicity of an all-white room but I know from having an all-white bathroom, it doesn't half show every spill and every bit of dust, hair, fluff etc. I clean the floor and within a couple of hours it's mucky again. Will be a lot worse in a kitchen!
I'm not loving the sound of shiny black splashbacks either but perhaps they're less contrasting than they sound. Sounds a bit 80s to me.

Mosaic123 · 03/04/2021 01:04

I think the white floor and the mirror splash back will require constant cleaning.

Andthenanothercupoftea · 03/04/2021 06:40

I think you'll have to be careful mixing cream and white like that. I think that all white with accessories would look better as it would look more intentional.
All white isn't for me but it can look striking.

HappyTimeTunnelDinosaur · 03/04/2021 07:13

I think the only thing that would worry me is that white can make cream look dirty depending on the colours. I'd probably go for either whites or creams. You can add in more colour with other things afterwards, like blinds/curtains, rugs etc.

I recently just painted everything in my kitchen white and black (white tiles, cupboards and black worktop). I found it a little too clinical do I painted the walls Saphire Salute blue and did blue stencilling above the stove to make it feel more homey.

Dancingsmile · 03/04/2021 07:54

I think you need to keep it all white to keep the theme.
It may stand out too much otherwise.

HeronLanyon · 03/04/2021 07:57

Sounds great to me but I would definitely have quite a lot of colour with kitchen ‘stuff’. If you are more clinical and minimal in the kitchen it might be a bit too cold ?? Black splash back sounds hard unless soften with colour ?
Good luck op.

folloyourarro · 03/04/2021 08:03

Yes not too sure about white and cream? I would stick to white.

Gunpowder · 03/04/2021 08:26

Actually I love lots of whites and off whites/creams mixed together. I think it looks soft and timeless, and will be a good contrast with the dark furniture. Not sure about the black mirrored splash back, it sounds harsh as Heron and Sarah say. I’d either do regular mirrored, stainless steel or continue your quartz work-surfaces up. This may be me being behind the times though.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 03/04/2021 08:29

Sounds like my idea of heaven!

Luckyelephant1 · 03/04/2021 08:40

I think it also depends on what kind of space your kitchen is. If quite large and airy with big windows and lots if natural light then it will be lovely. If not then it could look harsh and clinical.

Not a fan of the sound of a black mirrored splashback though but maybe I need to see an example to picture it properly. I personally prefer tiled splashbacks anyway.

ceilingsand · 03/04/2021 09:03

I think you should keep looking at ideas and be absolutely certain that when you have your final scheme, you are happy with it. I'm not a kitchen design person either. I'd be happy with white and cream and even another neutral in the mix but I wouldn't mix that look with black or stainless steel. To me they seem like different types of styles. There are lots of shades of white. Maybe look at something like the explanation of the neutral palates at farrow and ball. Different colour families of neutral shades can mix but not all.

I do think white and cream (assuming warm yellow or red based creams) shades can go together, but it also depends on the aspect of the kitchen. I'd never mix pure brilliant white in a shadier space-it looks cold. Although it used to look great in my sunny loft.

OneKeyAtATime · 03/04/2021 09:16

I like the sound of it

Lipz · 03/04/2021 09:27

Ooh it sounds fab. One of my sil has her kitchen done with everything white, when we visited just before she added anything we thought it was too much white, but, she uses soft furnishings and electricals to break up the colour, all she has to do is change the cushion covers, the kettle and toaster and she has a whole kitchen makeover. I always get kitchen envy when I visit.

Onandoff · 03/04/2021 09:27

I would ditch the white floors and go for a very pale wood.

Annebronte · 03/04/2021 09:31

Agree, wood flooring would be nicer. I’d also go for a softer colour in the splashback; black sounds a bit harsh. I do like the overall white effect though: clean and light.

Woodpecker22 · 03/04/2021 09:43

It depends if you have children or pets. If so I would avoid white floors.

FAQs · 03/04/2021 10:39

It sounds a little unimaginative.

ComfortFoodCorner · 04/04/2021 08:51

Thank you for all the responses, it gives good perspective. The kitchen/Living is not too big, and not too small either. It's a decent size, with the bi-fold doors and big window we are planning, the room would get lots of light. I personally like to have brilliant white walls, and also love to have colorful cups, kettle etc. They do stand out really good. Good thought on dark mirror splashback, I thought toughened glass splashback in bronze looks good. I agree cream cupboards would look dirtier when compared to white, so I will try with different samples of the shades. I dont have pets and my daughter is nearly 9. So dont expect the area get too messy. Thanks again, the responses are very helpful. Cant wait for the project to be finished/ :)

All the walls in my house are white. Dulux white. Always have been. I like it.
Easy to freshen up.

Also have gloss white kitchen cupboards. But wood worktop. And multi coloured tiles splash back. And dark grey floor.

Works fine I think.
