Stair bulkhead in box bedroom

Viewed a house today that we really liked. The box bedroom has a stair bulkhead in it and we are not sure a single bed would actually fit in the room because of this. We would need this room to eventually be a bedroom for DC no.2 who I'm currently pregnant with. A toddler bed would fit in ok but what then? Has anyone had a cabin-type single bed made to go over the bulkhead? Or something like that? At what age could a DC go into this style of higher bed and also how much did it cost you to get this done?

We have just moved into a house with a bed built over the bulk head. The bulkhead has been built like a stair so the bed isn’t too high. Have attached a really bad drawing!!

Depends how tight it is and how tall it is. In our old house we had a wide short one in the bedroom you couldn’t fit a bed in, or walk down the stairs without hitting your head. We made it less wide but tall enough for it to be a shelf behind a bed. We did have to take the skirting boards off and shoe horn the bed in though. Someone I know has Built up the area underneath with storage from IKEA as a make your own cabin bed.

Although I don’t think mid sleepers are recommended to under 6’s (only seen on a previous thread where a little girl got concussion standing up under the bed twice).

If you need the baby to go in that room then it wouldn’t be for me. I know young kids who have gotten hurt on mid sleepers or elevated beds just by jumping on the bed. Is there any scope to move the staircase?

No, couldn't move the staircase. Well the baby would be in a toddler bed to start with so it would only be once they've outgrown that it would become an issue. My niece didn't come out of her toddler bed into a single until she was 5.5 which I thought was not uncommon but I guess it depends how big the child is hah. Didn't think about jumping, good point.

I live in an area where 90% of third bedrooms have this, many people have built beds on top, I will see if I can find a link to solutions.

Sorry can’t post a link but if you type stairboxes in bedroom in google there are loads of ideas for beds over them.

RandomMess · 02/04/2021 23:45

IKEA do extending children's beds, you would probably be able to use one of those until your child was 10, I'm 5' and have slept ok in one.

A friend moved into a place with a box room. Could only fit a bed in one dimension, but it was clumsy and tight!
Her husband is a tradie and cut through the bulkhead and remodelled it. It’s now a single cabin bed built in.

Half the housing stock in our city is like this and in one house we viewed there was a built in bed covering the bulk head. Seemed to be made with a door, do you could lift it up and use the space underneath for storage.

Others had the bed across the room and a chest of drawers on top of the bulkhead or a built over cupboard.

Yes, we had one made by a carpenter when we had fitted wardrobes put in, it was basically a single bed sized piece of hardboard screwed down directly on to the bulkhead so only needed to be attached to the wall at the other end, it cost next to nothing.

A friend of mine had a box room exactly as you describe and they built her bed above the bulkhead. It was lovely and cosy - storage underneath. I used to sleepover - so there was room for an air bed on the floor too!

My huge 98th centile 6 year old still fits in a toddler bed. We have just had a bed built over the bulk head with lots of lovely storage under it. I wouldn’t have trusted him any younger as he’s a whirlwind. He’s been in the bed a couple of months now and is surprisingly sensible in it

Thanks all, sounds like it should be possible to keep a little one in a toddler bed for an extended period of time then transition to a single over a bulkhead. Smile
