Solid roof conservatory, do you have one?

Do you love it or hate it? Do you use it all year, was the price similar to getting an extension (ie out of my price bracket) plan b is a garden room but as that will take up most of my garden I'm looking at alternatives.

Thanks

Yes and we love it.

Waveifyouknowme · 02/04/2021 19:12

Excellent, I have some questions if you don't mind answering them does? does it really feel like a proper room? Do you have it open plan or is it a self contained room? Did you replace the roof or was it built with solid roof

It's like a real room, it's where we relax at night. I think it was built with the roof but it was here when we moved. It's kind of separate but kind of not, there's a wall of glass bricks and then a bi fold door between it and the living room.

Watching with interest as we're also debating a full on extension vs a "dwarf wall" or full roofed conservatory!

Waveifyouknowme · 02/04/2021 20:37

Thanks daffs that's exactly what I want really appreciate your reply.

bubs I'd really like an extension but can't afford it, whilst solid roofs are not cheap and do need building regs they appear to be cheaper than traditional extension and I love that they are so light.

We recently have had a insulated internal roof put in ours with a plaster finish. I wish I had done it sooner.

Waveifyouknowme · 02/04/2021 20:43

bears is this like a floating ceiling? I have just been looking at this as glass roof are quite a lot cheaper and don't need b.regs.

We had a warm roof fitted over the existing glass roof. It was insulated inside and cladded. Whilst it's made the conservatory much more useable during the summer (it used to get like an oven) it's made very little difference over the winter and it's still too cold without having the heater on all the time. Saying that it cost 5.5k which is much cheaper than replacing it with an extension.

You keep your existing ceiling and they put wooden batons up underneath then put insulation between the batons, cover with plasterboard then either plaster over or cover with plastic cladding. It's the cheaper way to do it and cost us £2k. We can now leave our internal doors open all year where as before we'd chill our wine in there in the winter 🤣

Thanks, I could cope with that. Could send the kids out there when it's cold but I'd get to use it in the summer

bears an unforseen benefit of a cold conservatory. Your word cheaper is exactly what I'm looking for.

I wish I had done ours sooner. I WFH in the conservatory all winter. My neighbour had his done and a family member had had hers done since I've had mine. Don't get me wrong you still need heating in there but it's no way near as bad as it was, just something to take the chill off. I haven't tried it over summer yet.

Roussette · 02/04/2021 21:44

We had a conservatory fitted 20 years ago, love the heat no problem.

BUT it was very hot in summer and very cold in winter (it's open plan here)

We had a solid roof put on, It was the BEST thing ever. It was a company that just specialise in this. Lightweight roof tiles with no planning permission needed.

I just wish we'd had it done before. We are insulated in the winter and heating bills are down. And in the summer it's not really hot.

I'm just cross we didn't have it done a long time ago

Waveifyouknowme · 02/04/2021 21:46

Thank you bears and roussette like everyone my money is hard won, I don't want to waste it.

We had been set on putting on a conservatory for a dining room but having read so many posts against them we are thinking again. I'd love a room with dwarf walls and with all the glass of a conservatory but with a solid roof with several velux windows. I'm thinking that as we really can't afford an extension, then maybe going the conservatory route and if it doesn't work how we hope then getting a tiled roof put on might be the way to go.

aliasd · 05/04/2021 17:29

Had ours done and absolutely wish we'd done it sooner, our conservatory is the width of the house, I insisted the builder who did the new roof put 2 radiators in as I wasn't convinced it could ever be that warm he tried to say its not necessary and 1 was enough.. I've actually turned one off as it gets too hot in the winter which is a phrase I never thought I'd say! We have 2 velux windows in ours.

LightSoySauce · 05/04/2021 17:51

We did ours too and love it. Extension the same size would have been at least £30k - solid roof cost about £10k but we had the walls plastered at the same time. We have 2 big skylights so it isn’t too dark in the next room. We have a Dyson hot and cold fan thing that we use on the coldest and hottest days.

LightSoySauce · 05/04/2021 17:52

Also to add that the other benefit was the time it took to do. Much shorter than a full extension

cachedelete · 05/04/2021 21:07

In-laws had their roof upgraded and the conservatory went from a sometime-used room when warm enough to default sitting room all year round. I was really surprised!
