Any advice on glass balustrade to replace old metal railings on patio?

We currently have metal rails on a patio which is a a few feet above the ground level rooms. They have been in for over 30 years and from the windows look a bit like prison bars and are pretty rusty. We're thinking of replacing with new rails or even glass panels. Has anyone done this? Would it be a problem with kids playing on the patio? Any advice appreciated

I'm also thinking about doing this to help the light in/ make the view more pleasant and open from the kitchen/diner. So I'm also interested in other peoples' thoughts on them.

Also looking to do this but afraid I have no advice! 😂🤦🏻‍♀️

I would guess the right sort of strengthened glass and appropriate fixing will be hideously expensive. Sounds fab though!

We have glass fencing, what would you like to know?
Ours surrounds our patio. We got a quote but then my DH fitted it himself. We bought toughened glass from a local company, fence posts and the fittings were from the Internet. Took him about a day to fit 5 panels (roughly 9m).

Chunkymonkey123 · 04/04/2021 18:37

So price wise the glass was £100 a panel and the fittings were £20 a panel. Our panels are 1.4m long. We got a quote from a company for £1600 but we paid less than £800 total. We’ve actually just ordered more glass as decided to extend it.

Oh and our children climb all over them and no damage yet!

Sorry the picture is rubbish, can’t find a good one without my children in it!

This looks lovely! Definitely opens the space up! I wonder if my DP would be able to do it as that's a big saving!

@Chunkymonkey123 can I ask how tricky/easy it was to install them yourself? I think my DH would probably be inclined to give it a go! 🤦🏻‍♀️

We have timber posts and hand rail and glass panels. Glass secured by d clamps on the side and spigots at the bottom. We love it. Helps with light etc definitely. We found the glass cheaper than the spigots!! I think it was less than £300 for the glass. Striaght from local manufacturer. Polished edges. About 90 heigh. Four panes about 1m wide, though one was a bit wider. Timber painted to match the composite deck. Whether you have a hand rail or not makes a difference to the level of support you need. Good luck with it!

We have one! I jokingly call it my Covid screen.

The one in the photos cost £900 including VAT 5 years ago. We opted for the extra bar at the bottom to stop little feet from sliding under (1 and 3 at the time). Reinforced safety glass and has not given us a moment's worry the whole time we've had it. There's been a couple of solid thunks but it reminds me of how great quality it is! I thought it would be a pain to clean and considered wire fence instead but Leighton said that was more dangerous with climbing children and it's actually incredibly quick and easy to clean. I do it twice a year (plus spot cleaning of the odd bird poo) and it's a joy to look at all year round. Best garden decision I ever made! Don't ask me about the tosser who laid the patio on sand and clay

Apologies that should have been £1560 not £900 Confused

My DH is good at DIY but the only real tricky bit is drilling the support into the wall as the glass attachments are just grippers. I think it’s easy enough to do yourself.

dizzyupthegirl86 · 05/04/2021 11:35

You can do it with stainless steel posts so no drilling into a wall required. That sort it system is designed to be relatively easy for anyone with a half decent understanding of DIY to fit themselves. One of the things people seem to underestimate is putting the glass panels in place, they can be heavy and tricky to lift on your own! The bigger the panel, the harder, obviously
