Wood or tiles for kitchen floor

Hels20 · 02/04/2021 09:15

I have always had tiles but want to have wood throughout ground floor of house. Kitchen is large - with eating area and play area.

How hard is wood to keep clean in a kitchen? Anyone had it and regret it?

I’d go for tiles but not ceramic/porcelain. So hard and noisy with children. I wish we’d gone down the LVT route.

I had a burst pipe in my kitchen. Thank goodness I had tiles. My living room floor was wood and was ruined, but the tiles were fine.

We’ve got wood. It’s no harder to keep clean than any other surface.

I imagine wood would be fine in a kitchen but we have tiles.

We have wood, it’s been down for three years and looks fine.

We have large 800x800mm tiles in our kitchen, WC, hall, bathrooms and dining room and solid oak everywhere else. Whilst I love wooden floors. I would never ever put them in a kitchen. They mark very easily with spilt water if it doesn’t get wiped up straight away and you invariably get water on the floor in the kitchen near the sink and dishwasher. Split food and drinks are also likely to leave a mark. I would go for tiles without question - I’m really not a fan of any kind of fake wood which some suggest as a more durable option.

Am in this dilemma myself at the moment - we have granite tiles currently which I hate, everything breaks on them. Pine floorboards in the rest of the ground floor (Victorian) and really want to match this in the kitchen but thinking softwood not a good idea... so will probably go for engineered wood and stain to match my existing floorboards. I know it's a risk but will put my washing machine on tiles! Cannot bear fake anything so don't want Karndean/Amtico even though MN loves them.

Although does anyone have cork? Am quite intrigued by this option...

I’m currently looking at bamboo. Twice as hard as oak, more environmentally sustainable, cheaper for high end bamboo than for high end oak.

Love love love my Karndean

Love my engineered oak kitchen floor. It's a large north facing room, tiles would just be too chilly. The floor has been down 9 years and barely a mark on it.

I hated tiles - anything dropped on them smashed to smithereens and they were cold - and we have marmoleum now. Hardly marks, a doddle to keep clean.

IME water will stain wood no matter what you do with it, with the exception of floor paint.

I wasn’t sure what to get when we moved, and was leaning towards idea of wood, but was worried how well it would hold up to the kitchen traffic/constant water drops and so on. In the end I went with wood effect tiles, and love them. Managed to get a good deal from b&q at the time.

Good quality wood look vinyl has worked best for me. Originally laid in 2002 and still as good as new.
