Is it normal to suddenly feel massively attached to my house before I sell it?

Had the photographer around today so house will probably be up for sale from next week. All of a sudden I can only see and think of the wonderful things about my house and street.

Reasons for selling :
We bought this house as a 1st rung on the ladder. It is small, not in the best area, doesn't have room for a bath (just a shower) and it's a bit pokey.

Reasons for buying
Nicer area, bigger house, more likely to increase in value long term.

We don't have children so in theory could stay in current small house but not love the area (and have nothing to downsize to in old age).

I would like more space, a dining area, a bathroom... This area is probably going downhill.

Sorry, waffling now. Is it like ending a relationship where you only think of the good points at the end?

Oh and we're mid-40s, would need a mortgage so probably now or never really Shock

I was sad when I sold my house in a way, we had made alot of memories there it's your home so you are likely to have an attachment to it.

On the other hand I was excited to be moving on.
I think your feelings are normal.

Maybe because you’ve spruced it up to make it appealing to buyers, you’ve got a new found appreciation for it?

But really you know you’ve outgrown it.

I think it’s pretty normal. I spent years saving to be able to buy a house and get out of my flat with it’s shitty neighbours and crap landlord, but when it actually came time to move I was in bits. I love my house and don’t regret moving for a second, but those last few weeks in my flat were very strange - I’d spent so long desperate to move, but the nostalgia and memories were hard to walk away from.

It passed pretty quickly though, and now I can’t imagine living anywhere else!

You haven't listed any positives? Of course you will feel somewhat attached, but like I said, you didn't list a single positive

Sassymcsasserson · 01/04/2021 21:29

I felt exactly the same but the minute we were in our new house it felt like home and so much better than our old one!

Thank you all!

The positives for my current house:
It is technically big enough for 2 adults
It has two toilets
Big garden
Driveway
Walking distance to park and supermarket if needed
Very affordable and gives us ability to save however isn't a desirable area compared to other areas of Manchester
Nice neighbours and quiet-ish (but this is due to good luck of the current neighbours, not symptomatic of area)

I was very worried about moving, whether we were doing it for the right reasons etc. We were in a dodgy area and we are sooo much happier now we have moved to a quieter safer feeling area.

I felt the same the day my house went on the market. It never went away and I took it off eventually. However in my case part of the issue was not finding a house I liked more.

Yes, in theory we had no reason to move, 50, mortgage free, v nice house, light, mostly lovely neighbours, we’d made it ours.

But the parking was a pain, it was terraced and new next door neighbour v noisy so relaxing in garden wasn’t nice anymore. We were going to have to get a new kitchen and bathroom. Garden was tiny and I’d filled it.

So bigger house, a mortgage, a better garden, a driveway.

Initially thought why are we doing this, but really we knew we needed to move on...it’s been so much better.

And when the time comes we will downsize.

I think it's normal. We had our photos done yesterday and the house has never looked so good. And because we've had lots of estate agents round they've been talking it up.

However that won't give us more room, or turn the house next door back into one house rather than 3 flats or improve the parking etc.

I'll be sad to leave but excited to make a new house a home

Thank you for all the comments here. House is officially online for sale and I'm feeling more certain that it's the right thing to do Smile
