What did you compromise on and what did you gain?

Having just had our offer accepted, I'm interested in this. We've viewed around 10 houses. The reason we rejected the other 9 was mainly due to garden size.

We compromised on: a private parking space, and being set back from the road with a front garden (although dh says that's a bonus as he hates maintaining them!). We also gave up having a semi (although it's a wide end terrace so not much difference)

We gained: more space than any other house we've viewed, a large garden and lots of character! We have an open fireplace, beams and floorboards. Plus a 3 minute walk to school! We also have 3 loos, which I find amusing.

I wasn't expecting this at all as I didn't realise there were any pretty houses in the area we were looking in (I think we drove down the street once and I assumed they were all tiny terraces). Where were your compromises?

I chose slightly less rural and not such a 'good' area, without a pub in walking distance. I bought a doer-upper.

But I gained an extra bedroom, a shorter commute and, once the extension was built, a fabulous kitchen with French windows and a view over open fields. I didn't plan it but the extra room has been a godsend during wfh too.

We compromised on location. We are a lot further out of the city than we would have liked to have been. However we now have our perfect, quirky home with enough land for our menagerie. The commute doesn't seem to bother me anymore

We were weighing up moving out of our current city to nearby towns, where we could afford “done” modern, spacious houses with new kitchens and bathrooms and en-suites but would lose all our social connections and a lot of amenities.
We ended up compromising staying in the outskirts of the city, in a suburban area we would not have chosen, in a big, liveable, full of character but needing loads of work 1930’s house.
I love it.
The area has grown on us and we love still being walking / cycling distance to the city, Kids have kept their friends and school / nursery, the house is an ongoing project so while there have been some frustrations, I am really confident that we can make it beautiful in time. Already having had the garden renovated (west facing, big lawn, private) has made a massive difference. Our kitchen and bathroom are tiny and really dated but in time can be made lovely.
No regrets bar student neighbours. We want detached next time!
