Move toilet next to tub in bathroom, drawbacks?

We're going renew the bathroom because it dates from 1984 and the tiles are falling off and I'm wondering whether to move where the loo is.
As you look in from the door, the loo is on the back wall on the left, the basin is next to it, and the tub runs along the right hand wall.
So someone sat on the loo is facing the door.
Someone washing their hands has their back to the door and is looking out the window.
I was thinking of moving the basin to the left hand wall so that there could be a mirror above it, and move the loo a bit to the right next to the tub. Is there anything inherently bad about having the loo next to the bathtub?

Dunno, ours is practically sandwiched in next to the bath but our bathroom is tiny so there's no other option. It doesn't bother us at all.

UKhun · 31/03/2021 20:20

Ours is - no issue at all. I'd say it's worse having the loo next to the basin to be honest.

TwoBlueFish · 31/03/2021 20:22

Mine is next to the bath, only downside is that it’s not next to a wall so can’t have a wall mounted toilet roll holder, easy enough to get a freestanding one.

Chumleymouse · 31/03/2021 20:22

When you’ve got food poisoning and it’s coming out of both ends its a godsend to have the bath next to the toilet. 😀

TheYearOfSmallThings · 31/03/2021 20:24

When you’ve got food poisoning and it’s coming out of both ends its a godsend to have the bath next to the toilet.

I can personally validate this.

dementedma · 31/03/2021 20:26

Ours is next to the bath. I put my book/ candle/ phone etc on the closed lid when Im in the bath and can reach it easily. Been like that for 19 years. Nobody died yet

DottyWott · 31/03/2021 20:29

Would the loo be under the window? Be aware even with frosted / patterned glass people can be seen on the loo, getting off the loo, taking pants down etc. At least, this is true of my neighbours!

TrainWhistleChoir · 31/03/2021 20:31

It might depend whether you have kids who crash into the bathroom when you're having a soak in the bath......

ViperAtTheGatesOfDawn · 31/03/2021 20:32

It would be a real nuisance not being able to have a toilet roll holder on the wall next to the toilet. I guarantee 100% that people will balance toilet rolls on the edge of the bath and that they will fall in the bath. You'll also have less room when you're getting in and out of the bath as a toilet projects much further than a basin.

I have a mirror attached to a window with strong suction cups above a basin.

CovidCorvid · 31/03/2021 20:34

My loo is next to the bath. The loo roll holder is on the wall between the loo and bath. So you do kind of have to twist round to get the loo paper but it’s perfectly reachable and I’m used to it now.

Mosaic123 · 31/03/2021 21:22

There are loo rolls on metal stands that stand on the floor.

It's expensive to move plumbing to a different location.

Rollercoaster1920 · 31/03/2021 21:49

Is the door in the middle of its wall? I quite like the corridor layout with bath one side and basin and loo on the other, you can get to the window.

Your loo would then 90 degrees which might be easier plumbing.

BertieBotts · 31/03/2021 21:52

Ours has been next to it in the last 3 bathrooms we've had!

No issues unless you have boys and are a bit lax about cleaning because then the musty pee smell tends to waft when you're trying to have a nice relaxing bath Blush

Mind you, I'm not sure a sink in the middle would make that any less grim.

It can be a bit awkward to clean in between loo and bath but it's not that bad.

SantiagoSky · 31/03/2021 22:13

We have a tiny bathroom with corridor layout where the bath is on the left hand side and the toilet and wash basin are next to each other on the right hand side. The toilet is attached to the side wall not the back wall. I love this setup. No issues with cleaning. You can use the edge of the bath squatty potty style.

PigletJohn · 31/03/2021 23:19

In fairly modern houses, the soil pipe usually runs in a corner of the bathroom, usually boxed into a vertical duct, and it is an advantage to have the WC close to it. it might not fit behind a pedestal.

The pipe is very big. Don't use a flexible one. If short, you can put a little shelf over it for you spare bog rolls and cleaning stuff.

Loushome · 01/04/2021 15:14

DH doesn’t like his head near the loo when he’s lying in the bath. He prefers to be the other end. He’s a germ freak.

Bluntness100 · 01/04/2021 15:18

It’s fine, we recently had our bathroom done and I was concerned about this and the fitters said practically every bathroom they did the loo was really close to thr bath and ours was actually the odd one out because there was some distance. It’s very common.

hotcrosswhat · 01/04/2021 15:18

@Chumleymouse @TheYearOfSmallThings you beat me to it!! Blush

OP our family bathroom growing up was like this, there were no issues I can think of Smile

notdaddycool · 01/04/2021 15:23

You generally don’t want the soil pipe from the bathroom to change direction much or you lose the flow and risk blockages and moving adds cost. I sit on the loo (seat down) whilst kids bath. Hate the floor standing big roll holder though.

InteriorDesignHell · 02/04/2021 01:09

Thanks all, that's been very helpful.
Tentative plan is to have everything wall mounted - whether that's left wall, right wall or under-the-window wall - so the magic robot mop can sail about unhindered.
Interesting point about loo sticking out more though as the tub would be a shower bath with the big end by the loo (so when you're soaking in the bath you can gaze towards the window - the window is over the basin and loo though, the end of the bath is wall not window).

Will have to get out the planner software and squared paper...

Am struck by the food poisoning thing though. No need to grab a bin! Not that that happens often, but when it does...

My loo is next to the bath, with the taps at the end next to the loo, it was originally a separate bathroom and loo but at some point was knocked through into one.

Brakebackcyclebot · 02/04/2021 19:57

When you’ve got food poisoning and it’s coming out of both ends its a godsend to have the bath next to the toilet.

I came on to say exactly this....

ancientgran · 02/04/2021 21:51

I think you are me. My bathroom also dates from mid 80s, falling apart, layout exactly the same, I'm swapping the loo and basin. I had to smile as I was reading your description was exactly the same as mine, changes exactly the same as mine.

I've picked a mirrored cabinet for over the basin, picked new loo and basin with vanity unit, picked bath. Still agonising over tiles.

Woodpecker22 · 03/04/2021 08:50

It is handy when you are bathing young children as you can sit on the toilet seat rather than the floor.
