Tap/plumbing question

I have a thermostatic tap which has broken. I'm no plumber so it's tricky for me to explain the design, but essentially it's one of those taps that can be placed either on the bath (how I have it) or on the wall (like in a more fancy bathroom.

The main fixings are fine and they detatch from the tap and thermostatic unit which has broken so I've bought a new tap which is the same, so I can replace just the tap itself. It unscrews from the main assembly part.

I can't easily get under the bath to turn off the water to the tap, so if I turn off the water supply to the house will that be sufficient? I assume I turn off the household supply, turn on the tap to let the water in the system drain away and then I can put the new tap on.

Any advice greatly received...

DH turns of the water at the stopcock when he replaces taps & things so yes that would be fine.

Yes that's what I would do , just check the stopcock ( if it's in the street ) doesn't turn of neighbouring properties too

Merryoldgoat · 31/03/2021 10:49

Thank you - the stopcock is just in my house so won't affect any other properties.

Very exciting to be able to have water temperature I can control again!

Yes, that's exactly what I did when I replaced mine.

it makes a difference if you have a hot-water cylinder, depending what colour it is (this is not a joke).

Merryoldgoat · 31/03/2021 23:29

@PigletJohn I have a combo boiler...

Put an old towel in the bath to cover the drain hole while you are working. Then if you drop any screws or small parts they can't accidentally fall down the plug hole and be lost.

Curious now. What's the significance of the hot water cylinder colour?

then you only need to turn off your stopcock. Open hot and cold taps in the bathroom afterwards to confirm that the pressure is gone.

some colours indicate tank supply, others indicate mains supply. You can also estimate the age from the colour.

Thank you @PigletJohn I feel confident now!!

Oh, I also turned off the combi boiler - just so it wasn't running while I drained the water in the house. Maybe not necessary but does no harm.
