Walk in shower enclosure rather than wetroom?

I know there's not that much love for wetrooms and I'm put off them by the cold feeling you get and also all the water dripping.

I like the idea of a frameless walk in shower enclosure with low profile tray. Any thoughts on whether these will feel less 'cold' (the bathroom is tiny so effectively little space for the steam go anyway) and stop water going all over the shop??

Or is it probably still best to for a fully enclosed space.

We've got one a bit like this. It's not as low profile due to where the pipes are - you have to step up a little bit to get in.

I didn't particularly have an opionion, it was replacing a small completely enclosed corner shower that I didn't like and felt claustrophobic in.

Really like the new shower, got new electric uf heating and a bit towel rail/radiator - never feels cold in there.

We also got a digital shower, you turn it on from the othe side of the room and it tells you when its at temperature. Which I also unexpectedly really like.

The floor doesn't get wet as it all stays in the shower, use a squeegee and shower spray on the glass. We are in a soft water area so no streaks.

the room feels really light and much bigger.

That looks lovely, thank you. Great idea to have a digital temp thing as well. I might need to have a look at decent heating options, maybe that combined with a shower enclosure will be enough.

Weve put one in and put a flipper screen on which is just enough to stop the water splashing out. I also make syre to put a bath mat right up to the tray just in case - but its been fine so far.

We have two. Tiled floors, then low profile tray and single pane enclosure. I really love it because it is quick and easy to clean. Wouldn’t have an enclosed shower unless no other option now. Especially after a quadrant shower in the old place that never looked good.

@MaryIsA

It's a bit like this.
This is fairly identical to ours, it’s great. I originally wanted a wet room but the fitters wouldn’t do it, as it’s an old listed building ans if it leaked it would cause too much damage downstairs and I’d pretty much need to lift the whole floor to get at it. So they wanted low profile and it looks fab, they fitted it so it’s flat to thr floor.

(MaryIsA's shower) That's what I wanted!

However, I couldn't have it as our bathroom floor is concrete and it wasn't possible to sink the pipes deep enough to get enough drop off for the waste. It needed a high step up into the shower. I was mightily pissed off!

We also got the very expensive digital shower I wanted. Digital is nice & the on/off outside the enclosure is nice, BUT it did reduce the water pressure. I've had technicians etc out and they can't improve it any. If/when this needs replacing I'll be putting a non digital shower back in.

My friend has a lovely one like above & can turn the pressure right up. I forget exactly how it works now but their tanks/boiler system Is completely different to mine (combi boiler).

I spent a lot of time researching it & thought I'd asked all the right questions, but still didn't get what I wanted. So disappointing.

Simonutti72 · 29/03/2021 12:44

Ours is similar & I love it. Controls at opposite end from the shower so you can switch on without getting wet.

Oh these are fab. Yes I definitely want the flipper screen and want to go as frameless as possible so all I'm cleaning is glass and not all the other bits.

Interesting about the

Oops hit send by accident. Interesting about the digital shower pressure, will investigate.

Glad you’ve decided against a wet room. We’ve had one and it was a disaster. Endless leaks.

We have a shallow tray and glass sliding door with a narrow frame. I think it looks very open and really makes the room look lighter and larger. It is a small room. I decided against just a glass screen as the space is small and I thought the bathroom would be constantly soaked unless it was completely enclosed. Really happy with it so far.

Kai1981 · 29/03/2021 14:54

Yes exactly, heard so many horror stories about wetrooms.

I think I won't have a sliding/open door e.g. have the sort shown above with a space where you just get in and out, but making sure it's away from where the shower head is and that there's a good glass screen (or two) on the sides.

I think it depends on the size of your room . We have a wet room but it's long and thin, so the loo and basin don't get splashed . It's fully tiled, with non slip tiles on the floor - I love it.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 29/03/2021 15:05

If you don’t like the chill of an open shower we have an extractor fan with four heat lamps. You can have no lamps, two lamps or all four and they are right above where you step out of the shower. It takes the edge off without needing to put the heating on for the whole house.

AlwaysLatte · 29/03/2021 15:12

We built a wall so that you go round the corner to the shower iykwim. It's tiled inside and on the edge but half tiled and half painted on the outer side to match the rest of the room. It's a double size so it's nice and spacious and no awful shower curtain or glass to keep clear of water marks.

MaryIsA · 29/03/2021 15:51

I really just wanted to have one sheet of glass without the flipper screen as I thought it was just another thing for me to clean.

I was really surprised how much warmer the room is with the ufh - it was cheap as chips and cheap to run as such a small space.

It's lovely to use now.

Kai1981 · 30/03/2021 09:16

Heat lamps?? I think this might have changed my life. I get cold even after opening a totally enclosed shower door. 😁

I'm thinking maybe a single sheet of glass for the worst drips (wall on other side) in that case with electric UFH (it's a small space and wouldn't have it on much) plus heat lamp!

A tip for those with glass... put some dishwasher rinse aid all over the glass and leave it. You won't have to wipe it down more than once a week as the rinse aid acts as a barrier. Smile

Ours looks like this Kai1981 but you can get other types too.

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 30/03/2021 14:54

I have this in our ensuite and I adore it. The tray is sunk into the floor and tiles over like a wetroom, but it's behind a large frameless screen. It's walk it, but has a flappy panel I can angle to make getting in and our easy (the space would be very tight otherwise), and has the bonus of also making sure all the spray bounces back inside. The controls are at the back so it can be turned on without getting wet, and the heated towel rail is on the back wall, so I get warm fluffy towels immediately that the water is turned off. I worried they'd get soaked, but they don't. It's honestly fab.

EmbarrassingMama · 30/03/2021 15:18

We have one like you describe and it’s great. We don’t feel cold at all when we’re in the shower and the water doesn’t escape the space at all, despite there not being a door. It looks really smart too, in my opinion. Go for it!
