If you had £800k - £900k to buy a house where would you buy?

I've been WFH for a year due to lockdown, as has my DH. Jobs are both in Secure sectors and as stable as can be without a crystal ball. WFH could be possible for both of us permanently.

Currently live in Surrey which is mega expensive so we are in a 3 bed semi. It's nice enough and we have a ground floor extension so a large kitchen diner. But it feels a bit squashed with 2 young children who are growing rapidly.

We are now thinking of moving but can't get much more bang for our buck if we stay local. So we are looking at relocating!

Our budget is £800k ish with some left for decorating and / or renovating.. Could push for £900k if needed but wouldn't have much (if any) left over for renovations.

We need:

  • 4 double bedrooms
-Medium - large garden.
  • Quiet ish road
  • Walking distance to local shops
  • Parking for 2 cars.
  • Local schools - kids currently at primary but secondary is most important. Would only move to areas with great secondary state schools.
  • local kid's sports clubs like swimming & tennis.

Apart from that, we are open to suggestions so please fire away with your inspiration!

Can you narrow it down a bit ?

I mean you could get that in the vast majority of the Country for £500 000 to £600000 I'd have thought. (or less again in some areas)

Here you go, come to Shrewsbury.

Close to Priory and Meole Brace schools. Lots going on in the town but right on the doorstep of the most beautiful countryside.

jackstini · 28/03/2021 23:31

Cheshire?

Some top state schools there. Quite sporty, easy transport links

Or go somewhere cheaper and spend on private school?

What type of house - new build, period property..?

Do you have any friends or family you need to be near?

Hoolihan · 28/03/2021 23:31

Hove.

GreenGarden22 · 28/03/2021 23:32

maybe I should've phrased it differently. What's the best house in the best area (in your opinion) for £800k.

That's lovely, and Shrewsbury is such a nice town

I am currently in Hove, lots of clubs etc. though my kids are currently too young for that. King Alfred’s leisure centre does swimming lessons :) here’s a house just down the road from me in walking distance of Waitrose www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/104640659#/

Lovey house but very similar to what we already hve. Garden way too small.

I'd like a detached house. And definitely not one that has been extended to the max

So ideally a detached house that was designed and built as. 4 bed house originally.

Lovely house! Never been to Shrewsbury - what's it like? Do you like it?

Liverpool, Hove, Shrewsbury, East Surrey/Kent villages are pretty.

LampsOn · 28/03/2021 23:52

Hexham / corbridge or Morpeth in Northumberland are beautiful. Excellent schools and fabulous countryside. This came on the market today:

Not Hove then! I live in Shoreham, west of Hove and you could get what you're after here. Very nice in lots of ways if you don't mind a small town atmosphere.

I don't know how far you are prepared to move but for that money you could get something like this in a good north Liverpool suburb. Close to trains to Liverpool and Southport, shops, restaurants and good schools nearby.

Another Northumberland recommendation! I love Warkworth! A castle, a river, a beach, a pretty village centre with a chocolate shop.

More Northumberland, Morpeth this time.

WeeM · 29/03/2021 00:12

That’s a pretty huge budget in Scotland. Newton Mearns in Glasgow is one of the city’s priciest areas and you could have your pick of detached houses there. Or you could go to the West Coast of Scotland and have a piece of land as well as a large house. Or a Grade A listed 11 bedroom home in the Borders!

County Durham is full of similar properties in this price range.

Spanglybangles · 29/03/2021 00:25

Not what you are looking for at all, but for that sort of money, if possible, I’d move to Texas. I have family over there and can’t believe how much more you can get for your money. Just one example from so many. Big houses, big gardens, pool, great schools....this one gives you £150k change from your £800k Shock

@Spanglybangles no chance. The politics and the guns...and Ted Cruz, and no masks, etc etc. You might have a big house but you've got to live there too...speaking as a US citizen too...
