When to ask about leasehold details

We've just started looking to buy our first property. Is it generally a good idea to find out the terms of the leasehold before viewing? Or better to wait until making an offer/negotiating?

We have a tight timeframe we're looking at, so really don't want to waste time.

I would ask as soon as possible. If getting a mortgage some lenders won't lend on certain amounts of ground rent / lease lengths and these can take ages to resolve.

Ask as soon as possible, especially the length of the lease.

If your on a tight timeframe get the leasehold details before you view the property because it sounds as though you won't buy anyway if the leasehold doesn't suit you.

It's often in the property details but if not ask before viewing. I always prefer at least 125 years, though definitely not below 99, and watch those service charges and ground rents.

First thing to ask.

Leasehold length isn't itself a huge issue - it depends on who owns the lease and how easy it is to extend it. Worth investigating - so you can factor in the cost of extension if necessary.

Ask before you view, no point in wasting time. That said don't rule out everything eg a 90 year lease is really not a problem so long as the ground rent is low.
