Rickmansworth or Bushey?

We’re deciding between these two areas. Can anyone help us pick?

We have one dc (10 months) who will go to state school unless we win the lottery.

Are a mixed race family so a bit of diversity is good.

Commute a few days a week into central London.

Like villagey areas.

Is bushey boring? Houses there look slightly cheaper.

Nicest affordable houses in Rickmansworth seem to be by the river which doesn’t make sense to me as it looks lovely. Is it because the Uxbridge road is v busy?

Thanks!

Bushey.

Nicer location in my opinion.

I have a few black family members living is the Weald/Bushey area. Also close to Stanmore. School options are ok i believe for secondary. I can't speak on primary schools.

Which partner is white might matter. I say this because black men can have it hard in less diverse areas - being assumed to be stealing, up to no good, where did you get that car from..... I think this will be the case in both areas, sorry. For women I find these areas to be ok. There are always mums to chat with at nursery abd school gates, they all just want their kids to get ion. 20 years ago my siblings had some issues in school with nit being invited to birthday parties etc, but hopefully things have moved on some. If you live in zones 6 or further out there will always be that risk.

I grew up within 15 minute drive from both areas.

Hope that helps

Ok, so with that information i can say it depends which Asian ethnicity. My dad is often mistaken for Pakistani and therefore Muslim. He has been frustrated by the police around here....

I'd say Ricky is far more Indian Asian (Hindu) than Bushey.

Lots of good primary schools in both areas (I work in them so have good knowledge!) be bit more wary of secondaries around Bushey. Several of the secondary schools are 11+ so be aware of that unless you're very close distance wise. I personally prefer Ricky and think it's slightly more diverse. Both nice areas though

both areas multi cultural. Lots of asian families - bushey more mixed than ricky. Bushey you absolutely not have any racism issues. The next town along is stanmore which is predominantly m/c professional asian families. Primaries, you'd be hard pushed to find a bad one in bushey and many are excellent. Sate secondaries are mainly good to excellent if your child is reasonably academic as it's a semi selective area. Private schools are extremely ethnically diverse with asian families the majority in many.

samosamo · 25/03/2021 12:27

Yes. Perhaps Bushey is the only town in London with no racism.

OP, neither are particularly racist, but for sure you will encounter it in both, cat least along the lines I have mentioned.

Al the best, it's a nice choice to have!

I have lived in Rickmansworth for 20 years on the Uxbridge Road, there isn't a big Asian population in Rickmansworth, but do know Asian people in Rickmansworth and have never heard of any issues. The Uxbridge Road is very busy, one of the main roads in Rickmansworth hence the cheaper house prices. Also limited parking along some of it. Ebury Road and the Cedars Estate (streets opposite the Uxbridge road near the roundabout) are quieter but more expensive.
