House I am buying is in probate, how long will it take?

Hi

So I put an offer in on a property yesterday. I am proceedable (house sold & AIP). I said that I hoped to exchange and complete within 3 months, but the EA said the house was in probate to 3 siblings. I guess it will take longer but how long is a piece of string, right? Has anyone else been in this situation and how long did it take?

We have just brought a probate property, the probate took about 2 and a half months to go through and was started before the property was put on the market so was going through along with the sale. Which went through fairly smoothly. Probate can vary of course, but if it’s uncomplicated it should take long. Don’t let probate put you off it it’s the right property for you. But I think it’s not unreasonable to ask the date the probate was asked for, should help you estimate.

@Mabelene 6 months after submitting the paperwork? For me the arduous bit was the paperwork but once submitted it was v quick- OP sounds like it’s so variable, I would just check in with them regularly and see where they are with it, if they have submitted etc

Has the probate actually been granted? Or has it been applied for?

Yes, probate applied for in early Sept, granted beg March. Very simple estate.

It totally depends on how complicated it is. I’ve just done probate on my late father’s estate and it took 3 months. That was as easy as it could be with only me as executor and sole beneficiary. When I bought my house, it was a probate sale and took about 6 months to complete.
