Doing renovation for a house before we move in. 1930s property. Exciting and overwhelming!!

Complete newbie for everything. Right now we are not close to the house. The person I found to sand and restore the wooden floors say they do not lift carpets, it's up to us!

Silly question but who can I find for such a job and who can advise if the originals can indeed be restored. Don't want the floor guy services if the floors aren't good anyways.

Thank you in advance for your response!

Try looking for a handyman in the area.

Ripping up carpets on grippers isn’t a big job for someone strong. I would go to the house yourself and remove the carpets. Or at least look under a corner at the floor below. Sadly lots of wooden floors were removed so take a peek. If the carpet is on grippers and not stuck down, it’s not that difficult.

man & van

but tbh I wiuld consider laying new wood floor or new carpet on top of the old wood floor.
it might become very drafty and cold underfoot.

It's very very easy to lift carpets yourself. I have no diy experience and lifted mine and restored my floorboards. The restoration was more labour intensive though.

Unless you have some physical reason for not doing it, it is very very easy to remove a carpet!
Just pull at a corner and it starts to lift. Use a stanley knife to cut into smaller chunks if it's a huge room. Old underlay can be messy but that's all, you might need a scraper and will defintely need a brush and vacuum afterwards! Hammer and flat screwdriver or prise bar to lift the gripper rods which are VERY sharp so leather glove would be good for handling.

carpet lifting is easy - getting rid of it not so much. Depending on how much you might need to pay someone to remove it.

I chopped mine into manageable bits and took it to the tip in the back of the car.

If its good quality, newish - someone will probably take it for free.

I've sanded and varnished floor boards myself and its a messy horrible job. I'd pay someone to do it now. It was also draughty in the houses I did it in as it was just the old floorboards.

Current house has orginal old parquet so - when all the building is done - I'm going to get someone in to restore it - it's proper flooring and lovely.

Anyway get the carpet up and have a look at what's there.

Just realised you aren't near the house. Get a general handyman in - you'd need a recommendation. and get them to take photos.
