Bathroom tile grout problem

Hello, we had some tiling done around 1 month ago. This week we’ve noticed bits of grouting crumbling off. I’m a bit concerned about this as firstly I’m not sure why it’s happened and secondly I am concerned the water may be leaking through to the walls behind.
The plumber who did the tiles is now off sick for at least 2 weeks and can’t help us until then.
Can anyone help me by advising what may have led to this happening so soon and whether it’s ok to leave it for 2 weeks. Both shower (cream tiles) and bath (yellow ones) are in daily use at present.
Help appreciated!

I’m not convinced that’s grout. Looks like filler. Is being “sick” code for refusing to come back? My grout doesn’t look like that. Yours is too white. I am sure others will be more knowledgable but that looks too white and shiny.

This is my recently tiled cloakroom. Grout is dull!

possibly not mixed up properly so looks a bit like filler..??...but grout is cheaper than filler so i doubt it....i always apply some thomsons water seal over grouting....2 coats....no staining etc....

That is a BAD job Shock
I personally wouldn't be using that shower until you get it sorted. The bath is will be ok if you take reasonable care not to splash too much.
I think I'd use the two weeks to get a second opinion from another tiler so at least you'll have some idea of what might have gone wrong and how difficult it will be to fix.

Here’s my grout on high shine tiles. Bad photos but the grout is crisp and straight. It’s opaque.

Just a guess as it’s hard to tell from photos, but it could be that when he’s grouted it the bits that have started to fall out were too dry/ not mixed properly and didn’t stick like grout should ?

I wouldn’t use the shower as water will definitely be getting behind the tiles now.

Gosh that’s a really bad job....poor you....my grout is very white but much neater Grout lines than yours.....my tiles have been up 3 years and look newer than yours....I wouldn’t use your shower and get the tiles back ASAP...good luck 🍀

*tiler back ....not tiles back

@Kitkat151
Although your grout is white, it’s not the gleaming slightly shiny white the op has. I just don’t think that’s grout! It looks like a filler/sealant that comes out of a tube - like toothpaste. It’s very odd.

Thanks all. I think it is normal grout (or at least it looks normal to me in real life). The tiles have slightly less than straight edges so this may be why the grout doesn’t look straight. However I totally agree I am concerned it is coming off and not sure if we can continue using the showers (though these are the only two we have and not sure we can manage without until redone!).
Going to try to get someone else to come out and have a look.

You could try pressing into it with a pointy knife, grout dries almost like concrete, if it is filler it will go in fairly easily.

It should also be waterproof grout.

Bluntness100 · 23/03/2021 07:37

I think generally when grout becomes dry and crumbly like this it’s because it wasn’t mixed properly. I think it needs to be taken out and redone. Water will be getting in behind it.
